I think that's how Kishimoto portrayed killing intent at that time. It was the first jounin vs jounin clash in the manga, and Sasuke trembled in fear, saying he would go mad if he stayed there for an hour because of the bloodlust that was felt in the air. This is how Kishimoto portrayed that bloodlust.
