I agree with the OP. Orochimaru has been shown as a scaley white snake before and he has the same eye lines Kabuto GAINED when he reached sage level. Now people are always gonna sleep on Oro so be prepared to hear "No Oro can't be sage blah blah blah" the fact is we don't know but the evidence would suggest yes Oro has sage abilites.(which if he does would leave Tsunade as the only sennin without sage mode)

^This. I've wondered, Did he ever train under the snake sage? If he did I dont think it makes sense that Kabuto could acheive it and not Orochimaru.

Orochimaru was a sage before he gave Anko the Curse seal. And that was ages ago. Around the time Oro went AWOL. Here, look at

You need to be a sage to have senjutsu chakra (Jugo being the only exception). This is decisive proof that Oro is and has been a sage since before the start of the manga.

The only question that remains now is whether those marks around his eyes are the result of him being a sage. If it is, then that means that Oro's been a sage since he was a young child. But I have doubts about that.

No. Its not the same. "Sennin" means "Sage". Sannin kinda means three or three people.

I'd say no.It's been said that while Orochimaru tried to learn sage mode,his body then was not suited to absorb and he therefore could not master it.He also had the eye lines when he was a kid. If he had a partial sage mode,he would have looked different,remember naruto when he hadn't mastered it?Kabuto probably lost the eye lines because Orochimaru sucked his power from Kabuto,who had absorbed Orochimaru's powers.

Orochimaru had these marks since he was a kid under the training of the third Hokage...No it's not sage mode.A 6 years old Orochimaru couldn't have sage mode.And if he had, it would be mentioned by some other character like Tsunade or Jiraya.Kabuto himself stated that even Orochimaru couldn't master sage mode.

Orochimaru had those marks on his eyes since he was a child. And kabuto had the marks the whole time, not just when he entered sage mode, they were just harder to see because he was wearing glasses.

Oro was a sage but he didn't master senjutsu. Just like Jiraiya. Jiraiya wasn't a perfect/true sage either but he could use sage mode. Naruto on the other surpassed Jiraiya by mastering Senjutsu and is thus a perfect/true sage. Its the same story with Oro and Kabuto. Kabuto surpassed Oro by becoming a perfect/true sage.

Thirdly...Why Orochimaru needed a suitable body for sage mode:

Everyone knows that using Sage mode has its issues when it comes to a real fight. Normally one needs to be completely dead still to absorb Nature energy. Thats normally Sage mode's weakness. Since you cant always sit still in a heated battle.

Jiraiya solved this "sitting still" problem by having Fukasaku and his wife absorb nature energy for him while he moved around freely in his fights. Naruto uses his clones. Of course, Oro and Kabuto obviously also faced this problem. And Oro discovered that Jugo's clan seems to absorb Nature energy without "sitting still". Kabuto used Oro's idea andsolved this problem by acquiring Jugo's abilty to absorb nature energy while moving. Thats why Kabuto incorporated Jugo's ability into himself. Oro was gonna do the same thing but first he had to find a body that was compatible with Jugo's ability. Surviving the curse seal equals compatibility.

The point is that Oro didn't need a compatible body [Sasuke] for Sage Mode (i.e. molding Senjutsu chakra). He needed it to acquire Jugo's ability which would allow him to absorb Nature energy without sitting still.
