Amaterasu ignites wherever the Mangekyou Sharingan aims for. Purposely followed Sasuke with a slow reaction, his Mangekyou Sharingan created a long chain of Amaterasu which followed Sasuke along the line Itachis Sharingan aimed for.
That's only assumption. The slow reaction part.

But anyway, it seems that a laterally moving target can avoid Amaterasu.

So Amaterasu can be outran?

I don't remember any other instance to where Amaterasu hit it's opponent while they were running laterally.
For all we know itachi may have purposely allowed amaterasu to follow, rather than hit sasuke at that particular part of the fight. remember, there were many instances in which itachi held back, as we know he was not trying to kill sasuke, and subsequently allowed sasuke to live out of his love for his brother.

however, also remember this was the first time sasuke had ever seen amaterasu.

"Run little brother, run!" Lol

Enton = Japanese version

Blaze Release = American version

Essentially Enton/Blaze Release are the same thing.

I think he said that pretty clearly. and no itachi cannot manipulate the flames of amaterasu only create it.(maybe extinguish) that's why the flames that missed went further down the line of sight. (the trees behind sasuke.)

As stubborn as it sounds we don't know that. But Itachi did hold back a few times.

Amaterasu can be avoided by avoiding the eyesight of the caster. That said, Sasuke outrunning Itachi's Amaterasu isn't because of this. There were multiple factors. First of all his eyesight was gradually deteriorating. Secondly the previous defeated Tsukuyomi he attempted left him suffering from it's side effects (intense migraine, worse eyesight). Ontop of that he didn't want to kill Sasuke so he potentially avoided a lethal stare intentionally.

And while I can't prove it, Enton may actually be faster than Amaterasu. When Sasuke missed Raikage with his Amaterasu, the Enton made from it outran Raikage and circled back to prevent him from Karate Chopping him in the neck without sacrificing his arm. I say this because, Enton comes from previously made Amaterasu flames... meaning the literal only way to get the flames to his body in time was if they leapt from the burning samurai's armor, circled around... and fused to Sasuke's riblet Susanoo form.

size ***** much?

but to answer the question this wasnt a battle where itatchi was trying to win...its proven by the fact if itachi wanted he could have sealed sasuke away with oro when he had the chance since sasuke couldnt move.
