It doesn't only apply to shonen. A lot of media follow the same generic idiot/naive main character archetype that tends to get out shined by the deuteragonist/anti-hero/main villian for coolness points(and fan girls).
Its about persperctive too like what RicardoA said. I find Ed and some other main characters like Naruto and Ichigo pretty badass.

Same here, Naruto is a good character but compared to Sasuke, his development (not power wise) is shockingly stagnant throughout the series. "I'll save my friends " for 660 chapters

@bold: This is exactly what i'm talking about. Opinion.
I don't think a character to be well written needs to have a sad background, a gloomy aura and act cool 24/7. That's as boring as the cliche, shonen, goofy, naive main character.
Sasuke endured a lot and had a good development, but Naruto didn't by any means had a perfect childhood and this whole manga is about him overcoming his obstacles and struggling.
I don't think one is better than the other. They're both different and amazing.

I'm can't pronounce myself about Gon and Killua since my info on HxH is very outdated U_U

I mean, I guess if you're into those cocky, into-themselves types with some tragic ass back story and that too-cool-for-school attitude, then yeah, most of the secondary characters are "better."

Sarcastic response aside, it's really just what you like. I personally like the more goofy, fun loving, down to earth characters. I relate to them more too. I don't care for the mysterious "wah wah, I had a tragic life so let me wallow in misery and sorrow" type characters. They're boring and seen in many, many series outside of an anime too. I like an outcast, but not a little emo punk.

The secondary characters in shonen are usually polar opposites of the protagonist.
