Are you saying they underestimate themselves? Look at it this way, Jiraya is more experience and stronger than Guy, yet Guy beat Kisame. Both are experts at Taijutsu as well. Itachi encountered him already and he has examined the Amaterasu and gotten intel on it, there's a high chance he's learned how to avoid it. Second, Itachi ran since he knew there was nothing he could do once inside the frogs Esopha-gus. Of all his techniques, which would be the most useful, eh? And, Neji was far too young, cocky and inexperienced to compare to their levels of knowlege and experience of who they can and can't fight; would you rather take the claim of a child or his parents?

You're assuming at this point. There was nothing that showed that Jirayia had the means to take on both of them so tell me how he could have dodged amaterasu? And people say things in order to pay respect to someone. Not underestimate themselves. Neji was overestimating his power and being cocky, something that Itachi was never about. He announces when there is a strong presence all the time

Potentially, as they've said, but not explicitly. They could have underestimated themselves together, but to underestimate Jiraya and say that he's not strong enough to take on either one is asinine. There is a reason, after all, Pain didn't recklessly use all six paths at once, and planned the duel ahead of time (seeing this when he announced never expecting genjutsu to be used in their battle). Plain and Simple, if Pain, the most powerful of the group, had to simulate their fight ahead of time, he acknowledges his strength, and we shouldn't demean it because we like to be fanboys/haters.

This is true only up to the part of the genjustu. Jirayia can't do genjustu. Ma and Pa can. And if that had not been used in their fight then Naruto could have beaten Pain easily. That's not a credit to Jirayia. That's even more credit to Pain that he was outsmarted before the fight even began. Even Tobi was outsmarted by Konan but he had the means to stay alive. That's why I say Jirayia is overrated. You can be strong and overrated. He is only as strong as Kishi made him and Kishi made him to be a strong ninja but ultimately he can't beat ninja that are on par with his level or slightly stronger
