Why do some shinobi possess it and others don't? Is it a KKG, a clan trait, a learned ability ( SM ) or an affinity?

I'm not sure. But Kurama told Minato to,"switch his chakra to sensory mode," which suggests that it's something you learn to do.

Nope.

It's just not an ability every shinobi has.

He was talking about sage mode.. But maybe sensory is having good enough chakra control to use nature energy to read someone's chakra

It's not an affinity but a "type", it's a talent few people are born with like genjutsu. Someone with skilled chakra control can be a genjutsu type, and same with sensors but I think sensory feats are the opposite of genjutsu feats because in the end of the day all feats come from Hagoromo and Ashura's sensing is the counter to Indra's genjutsu.

I agree with Narutopedia's speculation/educated guess:

"Throughout the series, various characters have commented on the feel of chakra and similar comments regarding the ability to sense high, foul or potent levels of chakra a little, leading to the possibility that chakra sensing is merely a more refined version of this by either teaching or being simply born more "sensitive"."

@bold *dojutsu. Sensing is a counter to vision, not Genjutsu.

Yeah that's what I meant, it helps the person avoid getting caught in genjutsu because they could fight with their eyes closed

I assume it's just like Ichigo from Bleach with sensing reiatsu. Funny cuz it's usually the fodders in base mode that can sense and the powerful mc's/tanks have to learn to do it or switch to better modes for it.

It's mostly a dormant ability in all living things [Possessing chakra], which can be learned through training/chakra control [The ability to sense threat away from five senses].

This can be enhanced if the individual can control nature chakra [Through Sage trainings - Ex: Naruto].

It can also be a clan trait as Yamanaka Clan have displayed, although training is necessary in order to learn and improve the skill [Ex: Ino]

On the other hand there's Tobirama who could've attained the ability naturally [Since he comes from the same lineage as Hashirama], but even then he should've had to train to master the skill .

I wouldn't be so sure. This was before Minato was shown with Sage mode, was it not?

For most ninja they can only focus on single or few subject in ninja art. Just like some people are gifted with genjutsu but others with taijutsu.....
