A bunch of organised people believing in something/someone,having influence on society and the government it could go either way.
There is buddha and his followers and so is bin laden and jihad. As long as the person is open minded and can differentiate wrong and right any religion is healthy for you..Also I would like to add you dont need religion to be sane person if you need a religion to be a sane person then you are insane.Religion has nothing to do with morals or being a good person.
Yes it does. Collectively, the aim of all major religion is to overcome man's immoral nature and breed good will.
More died.... thats because the overall global population was much much larger in the last century compared to any other time in history. Infact if you take the global population and calculate the deaths due to war and murder into percentages of the global population statistically the last century has actually been the safest time period to live in.
Now if we are talking about what religion specifically the old testament of the bible has to say about war lets start with Numbers 31: “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."
Basically God told moses to take vengenace on the midianites to kill all the men all the boys and all the women who had slept with men aka were not virgins. But keep all the other female virgins alive for breeding aka rape, I can't imagine those women were very happy about that.
In the bible the death penalty was considered acceptable punishment for "crimes" such as homosexuality, adultry, blasphemy, idolatry, talking back to your parents and picking up sticks on the sabbath.......
Interested to know your thoughts on this.....
Soviet Union and China showed us in the last century that atheistic regimes can be just as bloodthirsty as the theocracies of the past. Human nature is the father of all savagery no matter what the common beliefs at the time are.
In regards to the story in Numbers: Balaam had told the Minianites that they would not be able assault the Israelites if they were in good favor with God, so they sent all their women as sacred prostitutes to seduce the male Israelites into Baal worship to get rid of their protection. Many of the Israelites started to worship Baal, and so Moses had to step in. The virgins were spared since they had no part in the whole incident. Not to mention, Deu 21:10-14 forbids women POWs from being mistreated as property: "10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her." Not exactly ideal by today's standards but this was very humanitarian compared to the behavior of other ancient civilization. You may ask "why not just let the women go free in the first place?" but keep in mind they live in a lawless desert region. Most of those women would probably get captured and sold into sexual slavery without the protection of their husbands.
I personally think most of the OT laws were only made for the specific time/place they were written. I'm not an expert on Jewish views on capitol punishment, but from what I've read, most ancient Jewish scholars were against any practice of the death penalty. According to some old rabbinic literature, some even said that any court that puts a man to death once in seven years is called destructive.
