The art style people consider childish and in the start it looks like the story would be childish aswell (cartoony cliche villains like Alvida or w/e her name was) but it quickly switches from that as they introduce a more complex side of the story,the villains become actuall danger etc.

I wouldnt call it childish but its all in the mind of the reader in the end,how he decides it is for him.
Just remember,you arguing about a certain something being childish in an anime is basicly how some people call all anime childish without ever giving them a try.You might try and get your friend to watch Naruto but he says no and you feel he is missing out on something rly fun,thats how OP fans would feel about you and OP,Naruto fans about someone alse and the show,etc etc

It is in a way that even though it shows the various complex issues of society as TOBI98 said but it treats and try to solve things in a childish way of just "boom and bang" you know. Violence is what it shows the answer of everything. And seriously it's getting repetative. What makes it childish for me besides the above mentioned fact,is how it only touch the surface of those issues instead of giving some answers to get rid of them in a more realistic way.

I would say, at the very beginning it looked a bit childish, the story and the art, but for me it changed when we got to know the background of Nami, and how Arlong was opressing those villagers for money, and how she had to survive, from that moment I haven't consider OP childish, sure it has some moments where Luffy, Usopp and Chopper get together and become complete children, but it doesn't have much effect on the story. The only arc where I felt it was more of a fun and childish one was the Dave Back arc.
