I understand what u mean , it doesnt make op any less interesting tho.. but indeed of all the pirates who are setting sail and are in search for One Piece and becomign the Pirate King because of the simmalarities it indeed seems Luffy was is the only legit choice to earn the title "pirate king"

To be honest I don't actually see any parallels, personality wise between Luffy and Roger other than the fact they had incredible luck, recklessness and the way they view being the Pirate King. If anything Luffy reminds me more of Garp in personality. Roger seemed actually quite intelligent and reminded me more of Ace.

With Zoro and Rayleigh yes I can see some parallels but Zoro's kind of a mix between both Rayleigh and Mihawk while at the same time keeping his own original character.

I probably might have missed it but when did Oda draw parallels between smoker and sengoku????

He never it's all the butthurt Coby fans who can't stand the fact that Smoker is the Garp of Luffy's era so they put Smoker as the Sengoku of the era in order to get him out of the way. In fact the only reason they put Coby as the Garp of this era is because he was trained by Garp (Which is ridiculous) Since Luffy was also trained by Garp so was Hellenmpo (Forgot his name) and many other marines.

Another reason is because they say Luffy and Coby are friends which completely contradicts the whole Garp and Roger relationship because They weren't friends they where Rivals and enemies who almost took each other out countless times.

Smoker is clearly the Garp of the new era due to his feared reputation to most pirates and the fact he is Luffy's enemy and has been fighting Luffy before he even went to the Grandline. Another reason Smoker is more like Garp is because he believes in his own sense of justice and doesn't care about rank, he only wants a high enough rank that allows him to chase Luffy which he now has and truthfully I believe if he was offered the position of Admiral he'd turn it down in favor of wanting to catch Luffy.

I just pray that they're not related in any way. I know they're both D members but still lol

Things like Roger having the same hat, Rayleigh seeing Roger in Luffy when he said that he wanted to be the most free man, the voice of all things, pretty similar personality from what've seen, and a couple of other parallels are pretty annoying. Then again, most shounen have parallels with previous generations... and the new generations usually surpasses the previous one. Will definitely happen in OP too. What also will happen is that we're going to get more Luffy-Roger parallels, just so that Oda will be sure that we know how incredibly similar they are

I never liked drawing obvious parallels with the previous generation(s) in any manga

Both first mates are swordsmen, and they like alcohol if that helps understanding why people think they are a like. imo, they also aren't that different in personality.

edit: why are there like 7 posts comparing it to Naruto. The OP said nothing about Naruto

That description is so superficial that if that would be the standard, countless of characters would fit it.

Like alcohol? I'm pretty sure loving alcohol isn't a rarity among pirates.

Swordsmen? That's actually very relative as so far Rayleigh hasn't really shown being a 'swordsman', but just someone who uses a sword as a weapon. There's a very subtle difference between the two. Oda has made people like Zoro, Mihawk, Vista, Tashigi appear like real swordsmen who trained their whole life with swords with the point of being a swordsman, often having high-grade swords and have a special connection with their swordsmanship. Then you have got people who just use swords as weapons. Yes people like Shanks and Rayleigh are beyond all doubt extremely skillful with the sword, but they use just regular cutlasses (as far as we know), there isn't any meaning in their swords. They just use them as tools to fight like countless characters.

That alone sets Zoro, who is driven in becoming the best swordsman in the world, completely apart from Rayleigh who has never shown any special interest in swordsmanship other than a means of combat.

Rayleigh is a very intelligent man that can easily keep a low profile and is most of the time composed. That doesn't sound like Zoro at all. The only thing where Zoro and Rayleigh are similar is how they stand in comparison with Luffy and Roger. As Sanji said when people think of Roger's crew, the first person they think of is the Dark King Rayleigh. When people think of Luffy's crew, they think of Zoro. This probably why people subconsciously see Zoro as Luffy's Rayleigh, however as individual characters they are very different. At least based on how he is now as we don't know how he was in the early days with Roger.

Scar? Alcohol? Using a sword? Those are such shallow reasons that if they really are used to compare them, by default Zoro and Rayleigh are very different.

And the reason as why people make so much references to Naruto is because Kishi drew so much parallels between certain characters, any kind of parallel in OP seems like a joke or coincidence.

Agreed.

A Swordsman is anybody who uses a sword. Practices in the art of the sword. Rayleigh fits both those categories. If Rayleigh uses a sword 24 years ago and loved using his sword against Kizaru : I'm certain he is a swordsman : no two ways about it. Shanks is a swordsman too going by the genuine and true definition of a swordsman. A Cutlass is a type of sword so too be honest it doesn't make a difference to if they're swordsmen or not.
That alone sets Zoro, who is driven in becoming the best swordsman in the world, completely apart from Rayleigh who has never shown any special interest in swordsmanship other than a means of combat.
You're incorrect here as Rayleigh WAS/IS A swordsman.

Of course there are some differences between Zoro and Rayleigh : like the ones you've just stated.
Scar? Alcohol? Using a sword? Those are such shallow reasons that if they really are used to compare them, by default Zoro and Rayleigh are very different.
Scar.Alcohol.Swordsmenship.Complete monsters.Same role in the crew.Similar captains.Same destiny.

True, but compare Zoro's love for alcohol to the other SHs. Rayleigh has much love for his drinks too compared to most characters Oda introduced. It was even stated that Rayleigh really loves alcohol. It's not a solid argument, but I gave you two examples as why people think that Oda is working towards a Ray-Zoro parallel

Swordsmen? That's actually very relative as so far Rayleigh hasn't really shown being a 'swordsman', but just someone who uses a sword as a weapon. There's a very subtle difference between the two. So, Brook, Hatchan (who said that he was the number 2 fishman swordsman), and a good chunk of other characters aren't considered swordsman? Anyone whose main weapon is a sword is a swordsman in my book. Ambitions can differ per swordsman.
Anyway, if you don't think he's a swordsman you can also view it they as way: they both use sword(s) as their main weapon. People can view that as a connection.

any kind of parallel in OP seems like a joke or coincidence.

Not really

Anway, as I said, I don't really have an opinion about Rayleigh-Zoro. At least it isn't made as obvious and out there as Roger-Luffy

I really like it in some ways.
I just hope the ending isn't the same.
