I think it's not that Obito was weak before, but he wasn't simply interested in the way of ninja. We've seen in his FB that the only reason why he even wanted to become chunin was because he wanted Rin to admire him and after a bit of training he managed to do so. Obito i believe is a quick learner demonstrated by the fact that he had no problem to use katon release at such a young age, no problem to use mokuton sashiki on the get go(Zetsu even said that i think, believing it's even the reason why Madara chosed him), and the fact that he learned Uchiha forbidden jutsus, Rikudoo no jutsu, Inyouton all that in less than one year from a teacher who couldn't even walk well
