Neji showed himself as a clear winner in the writing exam, showed his chunnin exam contestants he has byakugan if they didn't already know, I could see Neji getting jumped by a couple of the ninja at the same time or maybe him being with lee.

Neji can handle himself. other than Rock Lee there anrent many people in his category that can beat him.

aside Lee and Neji I think only Fuu and...Sakura (just because she one of the main characters) can handle themselves.

Well there might be a possibility that this is the reason that Neji became jonin, he may have gotten 2 promotions in once.
