well .... it depends on what you look for in an anime (personal taste), but i'll try to judge naruto from an unbiased view.
it has a GREAT story, relatable characters and good fights. The only problem i have with naruto and the keeps me from saying it's number one (in it's genre) is the power scales, they are a bit of a mess. in a series that revolves around fighting and combat, you have to a bit more clear on who is really strong (what makes a shinobi strong) so people don't debate about a lower class shinobi taking on lets say a kage and actually make good points (but that doesn't make sense). again its all a matter of opinion U_U

Far from it. If you want to go by sales, One Piece rules, by popularity in japan, One Piece rules. By storyline and content, that's a different story. If we're just narrowing it down to shounen action manga, then you have quite a few contenders. One Piece is ofen viewed as the King of WSJ, then you have Bleach though it's gotten very shit so generally it isn't viewed as a contender, then you have up and coming series like Beelzebub and Toriko, Toriko seems to be pushed by WSJ to take over Bleach's top three spot. Then you have sleeping giants like Hunter x Hunter, a manga that could easily rival One Piece and possibly succeed it should it return from hiatus with stable weekly releases and an ongoing anime, something that I think may happen soon as special chapters of HxH have been released recently and it got a new anime several months back. Then you have finished series like Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Yu Yu Hakusho Ruronui Kenshin and Dragon Ball. As for anime you have Code Geass, which easily trumps the majority of animes out there, including Naruto imo.

there are several better animes/mangas out there. saying Naruto is the best is mostly biased and/or personal opinion. for me it's not even close to being favourite.

It should have been. But the animators ruined it milking out the storyline, going dbz, bad animations, fillers.

yeah I agree with it. this dbz mode sucks not to mention the recent animations and the extremely idiotic fillers.

Naruto is a good series, yes. But best? Far from it in my opinion.

The anime/manga world has so much to offer. My personal all-time favorite is a manga named 20th Century Boys. It has one of the best mystery stories I have ever seen and combines it with fantastic character development. It takes the somewhat overused idea of kids growing up to save the world and turns it into a dark, complex plot in which the cast must discover the hidden secrets of their pasts to prevent tragedy from destroying the world and it's portrayed brilliantly. I personally cannot see how Naruto can compare.

Animewise there is Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann looks like it would be a cliched action mecha but it really isn't. Sure, it starts off pretty simple and the plot isn't really THAT deep but that's why it's so good: it tricks you into thinking it's mindless action and then things escalate. Gurren Lagann is a story of tragedy, despair, betrayal, hope, and perseverance. It's the story of how oppression can force determined humans to rise up and grab hold of the futures they seek for themselves. It's the story of how those who wish for the good of the world (or the universe) may be driven to "evil" for the greater good, even if it looks like horrific chaos on the surface. It's the story of a weak boy who grows up and suffers tremendously yet still pursues a brighter future and it's because of this that it may be so simple yet so deep at the same time.

There are a number of other awesome ones as well (Fullmetal Alchemist, Code Geass, Clannad, Future Diary, Liar Game, Steins;Gate, Zatch Bell, etc.) that also capture their own amazing essence in a way few other stories can replicate. I don't have the time (or desire) to focus on every one of those but the point is that as good as Naruto is, I just can't say it is the best. The plot gets weak too many times and the side characters get shafted for too long for me to say that Naruto is a top tier series.

It's at the bottom of the list with other garbage like Fairy Tail, Katekyou Hitman Reborn, Beelzebub etc...

It's definitely one of the most successful judging by the sales and overall popularity.... so, if that's what you mean by 'the best', then it is.

If you are wondering in terms of plot (plot consistency, development, etc), story, characters, art and whatnot... then no, it isn't. From that perspective it is average, has some fair attributes but nothing earth-shattering.

imho -> not really, as sales are not a factor for me
