I'm wondering if this has all been part of his Aizen-style plan to end the transmigration cycle? Maybe Madara figured out that he and Hashirama were possessed by reincarnations of the Sage's sons?
Madara's hinted at some "shinto" beliefs that would oppose the Hashirama/Naruto style buddhist beliefs. I think ultimately Madara's goal is simple
Kill the God He wants to draw out the Sage, absorb him and then kill the souls his family and son. Kaguya, their family matriarch, is trying to prevent this. Madara wants to create Infinite Tsukuyomi, achieve world peace, and destroy the idea of ninshuu and ninjutsu itself.
I think Madara Uchiha is trying to free mankind from the reign of a psychotic Buddhist deity that's been destroying the world for centuries to "watch his children fight".
We must accept at face value that the Sage is neither particularly good and seemed profoundly unconcerned with the well-being of the world he allegedly created.
