Well to start, I am a female and personally, looking back at how Japanese have been traditional for some time, it is no surprise to me that Kishimoto, may be at times, "sexist" to most fans. I mean, if you logically think about it, Japan has been traditional with it's standards for MANY years, and have just recently started to avert to American ways, in not only style and music, but with rights as well. Back then, the men were in charge, and the females job was to listen and observe and serve the food. In America, we had a "Women Revolution" in which the women had to fight for their rights to be on equal terms with men. Unlike Japan, America has many icons that stood out when it came to "Women Power and strength" such as the traditional woman holding her arm in a powerful way citing "We can do it!" In Japan, such icons we have here in the West do not exist in Japan. So ultimately, when western audiences see how Kishimoto, or any mangaka shonen artist makes his females, it often raises eyebrows for females. Now, for me, in the beginning, it did come across as some sort of "sexism" to me, as I grew up watching anime like "Dragonball Z" where the women in that show were just as strong as the men in a sense of both voice and strength. So for me, seeing someone like how Sakura, for instance, was in the very beginning of Naruto made me go "-_-' Another useless female character who is nothing but brains and no brawn..." However, looking back now, I have grown on my opinion to change, as I have thought it over accordingly and have adjusted since then based on the facts that I feel are relevant towards the issue.
Kishimoto most likely grew up in times where the women were still basically traditional women, and the men were traditional men. In a sense, his taste for developing women was harder on him as 1) He had a hard time with girls throughout school years and life and 2) most likely because of his upbringing and how the women were back then, and what he viewed as a kid.
Yes, i feel that making a strong character REALLY isn't hard, I mean give her a cool attitude, some tough abilities and BOOM, you have a character that is strong. I mean, if he is worried about the popularity of that character, or what people may think of her, oh well, give it a shot and see where she goes from there! For instance, the females in that show such as Tsunade, Mei Terumi, Konan, Hinata, Sakura now and all them are all very powerful women, may they be just a few to name and they are VERY popular. (Even though Sakura isn't popular to ALOT of western fans, in Japan, she is very big). We also have to keep in mind that this is a "Shonen Manga" aimed towards young boys, and I guess in Kishi's mind is that, he needs to make more powerful "men" than "women" so that the boys keep an interest and read. Now I don't know how the boys over in Japan are but here but where I live, I am sure they would have been MORE than happy to see a strong female as they find it "attractive" depending on the age group he is aiming at. In Japan, certain scenes are allowed to young children as they aren't here. Kishi has stated that he isn't very good at "creating women" but then I look at the reference to my favorite mangaka artist said as well, as he said he didn't know how to "create female Super Sayians" To me, it seems like an excuse to be made, as eventually, Akira Toryiama DID make female Sayians as as well as Kishi, in which he does make awesome female characters at times.
I mean, if you look at Japan, and how there girls are there, it's not wonder that he makes his females like that. I have a Japanese channel and when I usually watch it, they usually all talk about stuff like "Kawaii" or "Moe" for the girls as they are usually always dancing in their pretty frilly dresses and outfits. The majority of them in Japan, act and dress girly, while the minority is opposite. They are alwasy dancing in a girly fashion and talking about how cute they want to look. That is what Japan is mostly about. "Cute" I mean, in Japan, they make female figurines of anime characters in "Sexy clothing" or in really "Cute looks" for men to buy and collect. That to me, just shows how they view there female characters right there. I mean where I live, guys would RARLEY get a figurine of a women like that to keep in pride, as opposed to an guy figurine like "Wolverine" or "Chris Redfield" to get. In other words, in Japan, women are practically, still viewed as "cute and fragile people" as in America, women made their mark when it comes to toughness and strength. Now, i am not saying ALL women in Japan are "girly and feminine" I am just saying the MAJORITY there are...
In this one episode of Naruto that just came out, it was pretty much a filler episode that was titled "The Mothers of Konoha" or something like that, in which it stared Konohmaru and his gang, as well as the mothers of that episode who were now responsible for the protection of Konoha as their husbands were away at the "Fourth Great ninja War" Now, in this episode, it told about how strong the women were and that they will help take care of the village without a problem. I was thinking at this point "Oh cool, the mothers are gonna fight and use awesome ninjustsu, pretty neat"
*WARNING: SPOILER ALERT, DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HATE FILLERS*
However during the last few segments of the episode, Konahamru gets himself in some trouble with big Sumo men who say "Your husbands/fathers aren't here and we are gonna eat all your food and take you over" Just then, the mothers come to defend and what do i see them holding? Pots and pans....yes Pots and pans. I am like "What is this?! Where are the Kunai and crap" Just then, the mothers of the village, Like Shikamaru's and Sakuras', start to kick the Sumo's asses by hitting them with pots and pans xD I couldn't help but laugh at this and think "SERIOUSLY KISHI?" I mean I figured they were gonna do some sort of Ninjutsu or something, as you know, they are the women of Konoha, but no xD In a sense, even though it came off a bit "sexist" the theme of the episode that came to me was "Even women can handle their own when people they love are in danger" which to me, made perfect sense. Even though it wasn't in the fashion I wanted them to handle it, in the end, the message kind of explained itself. So Kishi, even though he COULD have made the mothers fight like with Kunai or Ninja throwing stars, they instead finished the job as a traditional mother. Most likely as how Kishi remembers his mother.
So in the end, I feel Kishi does have his reasons for sometimes doing and writing the things he does, at the same time, I really kind of at times feel like I am on the fence with these but overall, I have to look at the facts and think "Well, at least he made SOME strong and awesome women in his anime, and that's all that counts" This is all my opinion and how I felt about this matter. I know alot of you may not feel the same, but that's just fine. It is your opinion. I just wanted to state mine and how I personally felt about this issue. Even though it pretty much doesn't bother me, I am pretty much in the middle of these things. So yeah, as long as the anime keeps running good to the end, that's all that matters. I mean, this is Kishi's story, and if he wants to make it this way, then fine I have no say in the matter obviously and I highly doubt he cares if we call him "sexist" as he is the one with the loads of money he has for his franchise. So yeah :3
