They weren't even supposed to be in the series iirc.
As you can tell by the series, Kishi has pretty much been trying to dumpster those two. He's even using the gaiden's sub-plot to do it. He used Sasuke to basically go around the world starting shit then have him be manipulated for a large part of the series. Then having him flip-flop between what he wants to do.
I used to wonder how Kishi was going to write himself out of Sasuke choking Sakura
He went with impaling her via genjutsu then leaving after her being allegedly pregnant. (Plot twist, same DNA as Karin)
Pretty much lampshading a good chunk of things for them to either be explained at a later date or a heel-face turn with Sasuke having a heart to heart with his daughter.
Then he used Sakura as a red herring.
Judging by the concept art, he had a more interesting and outerworldly approach to the NV.
One that he's showed much later into the series.
Ōtsutsuki being from another planet. Living trees as the source of chakra, monster-type Akatsuki etc.
