I think that killing is good or bad according to the perspective of the killer. One quote from Naruto that actually seems useful was when Itachi stated to Sasue that 'we all live in a reality defined by our own perception and awareness' or something along those lines. Likewise, killers can choose their own reality- soldiers will tell themselves that their enemies are bad, and they fight for a just cause. Therefore they are justified to kill. Likewise even mass murders like Hitler probably consider themselves as 'good' people by their own rationalization. Tyrant leaders throughout history have been known to consider themselve's acting for a greater cause, or even for a god. This thinking is what allows the people to kill.
Killers have used religion to justify their actions, claiming that some god's will grants them the right. Publicly, the community at large condones killing (in some countries) by publicly executing people that are considered 'bad'. People driven to kill in anger or in revenge will claim that the victim's actions brought it upon themself. Accidental killings are justified by saying it wasn't planned.
As far as animals/plants go, human need to end life and consume life to survive. Whether it's animal life or plant life. That's yet another means of justifying the killing of lesser species.Perceived threats from animals, animals having diseases, pet dogs biting people... all are considered a cause to justify killing an animal.
In life, everything is arbitrary. Our language, our relationships, our way of living, our concept of good and bad, our art, our laws, even our system of naming things using our arbitrary words and definitions, all of them are just arbitrary. The human race is arbitrary. Killing is arbitrary. Killing is a word people invented and the concept of killing is something people invented. Strip the names and the definitions that humans have tacked on to everything and you can see how arbitrary our lives really are.
That's why I enjoy Naruto, it's an arbitrary reprieve from the arbitrary existence that we were arbitrarily born into.
