[Discussion] Is it wrong for me to use my connections???

Ok I am applying for a new position and I did well on the general testing and well on the interview. The only problem is that I noticed that while I had better grades on the test the other applicants seem much more suited and qualified for the position. So on my own merit I am pretty sure I won't get the job. However when I get back to work I found out that my boss knows all of the interviewers and is actually pretty close with them and told me he'd make a call in my favor.

Its a state position just like I am at now, but working where I am at I have seen a few ppl coasting along barely stomaching the task of filling out applications, because they have connections with different companies and these ppl have always pissed me off when I see others work so hard to find employment.

Back to the OT, what's your opinion?

Your boss would not blindly recommend you to his friends if he thought you weren't qualified for the job. Don't be afraid to create an advantage for yourself. Just because you may feel that it's not right, it doesn't mean that the other applicants agree, which might in turn prompt them to use their own connections. [If they have any]

Well, in my town employment is pretty much a who you know thing. Even though I am a temp where I am at I know this job could help me go places. Still, it seems a little dishonest

Can't help it as much as I deny it I do care about others somewhat. Not enough to sacrifice for them, but it does feel like I am cheating them

There isn't a way for the interviewers to measure the candidates work ethic. Your current boss would be doing them a favor by providing this detail to them.

Don't be stupid. Use any connection you have. Take the job. It is really competitive out there and connections are a useful tool to success.

the thing is, if you won't get the job because of connections then someone else will get the job because of connections. you can't be sure that everyone will play nice and you might lose the job not because you weren't qualified, but because someone else used his connections.

it's a competition, and most people will use every means they have to win, you should too.
