Before the era of ninja villages, Madara was the most gifted member of the Uchiha clan. Even by his clan's standards, Madara's chakra was unusually strong. He grew up constantly competing and training with his younger brother, Izuna Uchiha. In their efforts to surpass the other, each gained their own Mangekyō Sharingan. With the power of the Mangekyō the two brothers took control of the clan, with Madara as its leader. Under his leadership, the clan conquered all they came across. Because of the never-ending series of battles of the time, Madara eventually began to suffer from overuse of the Mangekyō Sharingan, leaving him blind. In order to regain his sight he took Izuna's eyes for himself, granting him an "eternal" Mangekyō Sharingan with which he led the Uchiha clan to prosperity.

While Itachi Uchiha would later go on to state that Madara took Izuna's eyes without his consent, it is unknown if this is actually true.

Yes, it is unknown. Itachi and Tobi are the only sources.

Itachi says he took them without consent.
Tobi says he took them with consent.

Itachi doesn't like Madara.
Tobi is usually defensive of Madara.

So we can believe them both and say it's unknown.


Although Tobi has been a huge source of information so I doubt he was lying. And Itachi simply wouldn't know.

tobi does defend madara to a very high degree....but he is a lier...itachi doesnt like madara but i think that his slight hate for him means that madara did something he shouldnt have done in itachis eyes...i trust itachi more then i do tobi but we gotta wait for it

Madara actually has EMS so he has Izuna's eyes so he get them somehow: either with consent or with force but I doubt that a blind man can take someone's eyes who has MS...so I think Itachi just lied to Sasuke so he wont trust Tobi
