This is a pretty logical argument. Gai knows how to fight against the Sharingan which gives him a slight advantage from the getgo. Since Gai uses purely Taijutsu, this takes Itachi's greatest defense (the Yata Mirror) completely out of the picture. OT: Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, Gai beats Itachi most of the time with only 7 gates... If you count 8 gates... Well... No contest. I think Itachi's only real way of guarding against Gai in general is crow substitution or if he uses this

-The databook gave Gai and Itachi an equivalent score for base speed, that's what they're starting out with in this fight.
-The databook gives Itachi a higher overall score than Gai. And it isn't outdated for this purpose, considering that we are comparing Gai and the only upgrades he received are the gates, but you are saying w/o 8th gate so...
-You're right that Itachi would not challenge Gai to a taijutsu fight, considering that he already knows what Gai is capable of and has even commented about his ability.
-Tsukiyomi does require eye contact, but the scan that you posted doesn't really show a valid way for fighting around it. Gai was going to continue looking at Itachi's feet in order to predict his movements and his reflection on the water. It depends upon where they are fighting.
-What is stopping Itachi from lighting Gai up with Amaterasu since Gai will be so busy looking away from his eyes and not notice it coming? Nothing. Gai is getting burned.
-Itachi's genjutsu doesn't only encompass Tsukyomi. He has others that do not require eye-contact. He has finger genjutsu...which Gai knows nothing about and is going to get caught under and he can summon crows and use them to catch his opponent in genjutsu, both of which worked on Naruto. Gai could break out, but by the time he does it would be too late. When one is in Itachi's genjutsu, they don't immediately realize it. It's not a problem with breaking his 3-tomoe genjutsus, it's the fact that one doesn't know that they are caught until Itachi decides to distort things in the illusion. Gai is dying.
-Also, the susanno pics you posted were pretty funny. xD But on a more serious note, Itachi was like that after he had just lit the mountain range that he and Sasuke were fighting on with amaterasu, used several firestyle jutsus, engaged in a taijutsu and weapons fight with Sasuke, used Tsukiyomi, etc. That's not the most accurate representation of him fighting from the start with it, lol. We can also conclude that he used his susanno before pretty proficiently, considering that as an Edo, he knew how to form Yasaka Magatama right away...he's obviously trained and used his susanno techs before.

Itachi wins. Gai w/o 8 gates is taking Itachi to mid-diff at best.

Dood Itachi is not stupid he will wait for gai to move then active yata right before gai strike and Gai won't have time to move because scientifically if you move fast enough to distort space/sound and you stop suddenly you will be hit by gravity with such a force you will be obliterated(Unless you are as small as a proton) so Gai can't stop himself until he collides and Yata can be activated fast enough.

Gai shouldn't be able to do anything in 7 or less gates as Itachi's eyes should be able to track him and move the yata to block as needed. Itachi being able to block all of Gai's attacks would outhink Gai and come up with a strategy to win. You need to remember that Itachi wasn't really trying to kill Sasuke in that fight, with the intent to kill Gai I think Itachi would think of a way to beat up to 7 gates gai. 8 gates gai is simply way too fast. Madara couldn't even keep track of gai (though he did have one eye to be fair), Gai would run circles around Itachi's susanoo at 8 gates and easily go around yata.

Think of it this way Itachi's genjutsu, Amaterasu, and Yata will be the ones to defeat gai because even though Gai has a strategy for Sharingan Itachi has even captured "S-Ranked Genjutsu Proof" Ninja on Genjutsu and "Highly Skilled Sharingan Users" so Gai is no problem.

Yeah he can use susanoo. 1 minute later you can go check the first 3 pictures of the OP.

As far as sitting inside susanoo it's NOT a option for itachi. It drains entirely too much chakra.
