Like the title says i wonder if it's possible for a Uchiha to obtain MS even if your closest friend isn't dead. We've seen that the changing happens when you observe him dying(Sasuke or Obito for example), but how does it work? If for example, you think he is dead at that moment, but he isn't(supposing he was a clone but you didn't know), you would still awake MS, right?

Then why Uchihas wanted to kill their comrades to awake MS when they could have proceed this way(using clones) without killing their friends?

I dunno, Obito's case was kind of tricky, because we don't know for positive that he got it from observing because Kakashi did the killing personally while wearing the other eye. That might have been important, else the author could have just had both of them witness her getting slaughtered in an ambush, but he went to the trouble of making sure the one killing her was a friend. The rules of the universe might have been that both eyes of a pair can't exist at different levels. And then what makes this hypothesis even more complicated is Madara making sure Obito was present when it happened. He needed Obito to crack, though.

The stimulus of activating base sharingan and MS are the same: psychological trauma. But MS requires a greater degree of it

It's completely mental, the reason it's said that you have to kill your best friend is because that the highest degree of psychological trauma one can experience and that's what it takes to awaken the MS, a massive amount of psychological trauma. Kakashi killed Rin his best friend and Obito wittness his best friend kill his love

It could also be a family member I guess. It's not like the eyes knows who is who.

Well I understand what you mean,, You are saying they could possibly gain MS through a thought. I sort of think that it all relates to a chakra...You know how Neji is able to sense chakra points, Well every character has a distinct chakra nature and energy, Even with a clone, there is always the real chakra point. I think that Uchiha gain their ability through achieving a new level of sight, Much like byakugan focusing on chakra, Sharigan focuses on chakra speed and change.

For example.
Naruto and Sasuke first real duel, Sasuke gained his third level Sharigan when he realizes that Narutos chakra speed had increased to a point in which he could not follow. In other cases he gains the ability through the users chakra change....

If a geniune friend had no chakra flow due to death . Then I believe that is when MS is unlocked... It is hard to deny if Uchiha are able to see the Chakra..
