Itachi revealed more about it when he told the truth to sauske during the kabuto battle. And by the look of it it seemed his father and mother pretty much let him kill them because he said something like: (not exactly sure on the quote) "so this is what side you choose huh? I understand and I'm proud of you." then itachi was shown killing them while crying. I doubt the leader of the coup would of died so easily otherwise.

May be most of them accepted their fate like itachi's parents and coup was bound to fail so they may have thought its better to be killed by clan member than other.

Well considering it was a surprise attack.. by a fellow clansmen.. and it was Itachi and Obito doing the killing..

One shouldn't be surprised that they were made out to be "fodder".

Had any other average Uchiha decided to slaughter the clan, things wouldn't have gone so smoothly.

Well, Shisui died before the massacre and it was the reason Itachi awakened MS in the first place. Madara wasn't alive then and Obito was told to not intervene thus leaving the clan with fodders excluding Itachi. Some of the clansmen did have sharingan at the time and this is fact because Fugaku (Itachi's father) was one of them. The point here is that MS > 3-tomoe/base sharingan. So considering the fact that there was no MS user except for Itachi himself means that it was much easier to annihilate the clan since most had sharingan and nothing greater. :yeah:
