1st: founds konoha
2nd: 1st's brother
3rd: 1st and 2nd's student
4th: jiraiya(3rd's student)'s student
5th: 3rd's student, 1st's granddaughter

future candidates:

kakashi: 4th's student
naruto: jiraiya and kakashi's student
konohamaru: 3rd's grandson

Well, the Hokage is technically just the person who can best defend the village - ie., the most powerful person in the village. It seems that people who are trained by the most powerful people end up being powerful themselves, and people from the same family as powerful people are just naturally talented. It's just a quasi-coincidence

But I agree with what bisha said its just that relatives and students of great ninja are very likly to become great ninja themselfs. I mean if jiraiya trained under some loser who didnt know the summoning jutsu he would never have gone to mt.mybokuzan and would probably be no better then a average Anbu.

I agree. And all of the Hokages deserved their position. The First was the Founder and also one of the strongest. The Second was really strong as well (he used the 44-seal jutsu with one seal). The Third was considered as the God of the Shinobi. Minato was undoubtedly one of the strongest and Tsunade is one of the Sannin. Minato was quite normal. Didn't have any affiliation with the Senju or anything.

If you read it carefully you could see that it said Jiraiya`s student not Jiraiya. He just mentioned that Jiraiya was the 3rd`s student

Well, in anime, Asuma once says to Shikamaru that he has all that it takes to become the next Hokage but it's just that Shikamaru thinks it's too "troublesome". However if we follow your logic, Asuma is 3rd's son and Shikamaru is his student, thus, in a way, still is still related/connected to great peeps before him.

Then anyone can become Hokage because all of them have awesome senseis. Asuma was the grandson or son of the 3d, so Ino has a chances of becoming a Hokage as well (-.-). All of them are connected to the elites, either being students of relatives of them, or being descendants of them.
