I think its more the juubi's weakness and sage mode is a apart of the sage of 6 paths power in some way that would explain where the name comes from and rikudo beat the juubi in the first place.

It's a possibility. It really wouldn't be surprising because he is the SAGE of 6 Paths.(Could be 6 different sage modes, that'd be cool, imo.) We must keep in mind, the Juubi is not in it's final form. We don't know if the Juubi has intelligence yet. It's power isn't concentrated without a host.(Not counting it's final form) And in one chapter, Kyuubi Mode Shinobi Alliance cut the Juubi's tail and regular jutsu's were working on it.
