Naruto was someone she looked up to for guiding her. She loved his qualities of never giving up, hard work and standing strong in front of the village which shunned him for a long time. She drew strength from all those things and was able to move forward despite being neglected by her father. Her love for Naruto is pure and not based on shallow emotions.

To answer your question: someone who is completely willing to sacrifice their life more than once for someone they deeply care for is what love is. And Kishimoto shows this several times throughout the series aside from Hinata: Minato and Kushina's love for Naruto, Hiruzen's love for the village, Tsunade's willingness to give ALL her chakra to Katsuyu during Pain's invasion, then proceeds to face him head on. Kishimoto uses sacrifices to convey the feeling of strong dedication and love towards the people being saved.
