He is alive but in lots of pain (insert nagato pain joke here). remember when his head got cut off? it's the same, but he has exploded to a hundred bits (random number).

I think the rituals are his keys to be immortal and because he can't do them he will die.

He's immortal. The death pact he made with Jashin allows him to live through anything so long as Hidan continues to kill in his name. Hidan will eventually die because he has no way of killing anybody through the ritual, which is breaking the contract with him and Jashin and he'll die. As for now he's alive, with no body, no air, crushed under immense preassure. The torture he's going through is enough to level him unconcious from the mere intensity to the point he's not even feeling it. Either that or he's still concious and his mental being can't handle the stress and he's going insane underground. He's probably praying for death now (ironic isn't it)
