You got it wrong again. To enter SM, he has to combine physical energies and spiritual energies with nature energy (he's always absorbing) to enter SM.

Hashi can always gather nature energy, but his own chakra reserves are limited, so he can't stay in SM forever.

While alive he could just stand still with his hands clasped toghether, and continue to absorb natural energy, while expending chakra controlling mokuton. So he loses chakra, but as long as his chakra pool is large enough, he can stay in sage mode indefiniately.

As and edo he has the same benefit, and he has regeneration of his chakra as well, so he could literally never leave sage mode.
