Is Gaara underrated?

He is somewhat underrated and forgotten I guess. I liked him better as a demonic killer with a troubling past. I wish they didnt make him so passive and kept a bit of his brutality and instability. He sunk into the shadows for most of part 2 as did all of the secondary characters who werent uchiha.

I would have loved to see him verse someone like kakashi or Guy and see what would have happened if Naruto didnt defeat him, how would the jounin go against the Shukaku, but thats another story.

Man know what you mean. Could you imagine the fight between him and Sasuke at the Kage Summit if he still had that killing intent? Darkness VS Darkness. Would have been a wild fight. He would have let loose with Shikaku and both Saice and Gaara would have wrecked the place and probably everyone in it XD

Agreed. It would have been the closest thing to Goku vs Vegeta.

He is not underrated nor overated. I think he is just fine the way he is now. He is kage so whatever power he had he deserved it

I think he is Underused.

Gaara has so much more potential that what we had seen. Everytime he was introduced he would gain some new crazy ability.

Gaara potential by then end of the manga had just as much if not more versatility with his powers as Hashirama.
He was so underused and as a result we missed alot of potnetial new feats

Story would have been much better if he kept some of his darkness, honestly I don't even understand why after fighting Naruto he completely changed. It made sense for Neji as neji was shocked a loser could beat him and then his uncle came and apologized to him but Gaara? No way. Just because one guy understands your loneliness doesnt mean that suddenly you will like your siblings and not be angry at your entire clan and town for directly attempting to kill you and isolate you as a weapon for all of your childhood. You can bet Id still be pissed as hell.

True, I could understand after the time skip and he became Kazekage. He had 3 years to reconcile and curb that killier's intent. And we also have to keep in mind that before Sasuke and Naruto, Gaara has never bled (Sasuke) or lost ever (Naruto) i mean as well as Lee did he never truly got through Gaara's sand defenses to cause any real damage.

But his whole world started to unravel when Sasuke impaled him with chodori. Gaara flipped when he saw his own blood for the first time and not someone else's.

Then that same day he faced the leaf's own jinchuiriki and he and his bijuu lost. That kind of defeat on your body and way of thinking can change someone's whole outlook on life. It would have been nice though if Gaara didn't go completely docile. I mean his opponents should have to push him but when his blood comes to a boil he should start sounding like the old him...

"What's that mother. You're hungry? Just wait a little longer...i'll give you all his blood." XD

He doesn't get mentioned much, but whenever his vs battles turn up most people seem
to see him as powerful, with occasional wank.

Yea gaara is neither underrated nor overrated, he is kage worthy, flight,sealing, good defence, gold dust, stopped a village sized explosion and also meteors from crash landing in sunagakure, did alot as a kage for his village
