they are a good way to get your point across in some cases and express what you really think and feel depending on the smiley...

if your happy then you do a happy smiley how hard is it to understand

I don't really mind them in short doses. I use quite a lot of expressions and emoticons whenever I'm instant messaging and what-not. It lightens up the mood, I guess. xD

If used correctly, they're fine. If they're spammed all over the place for the sake of it, then it's somewhat annoying.
