A shadow clone won't have an actual life force, so I highly doubt it would work.

No. Death reaper seals the orginal. When A shadow clone is periced with the arm it explodes in smoke cancleing the jutsu.

It wouldn't work on a shadow clone, it needs the soul of the original

I think it only worked with the Third Hokage because he used it himself at the same time. Since he was sealing his soul as well, the clones were capable of it as well. But that's just my assumption.

Clone: target/victim
If RDS is used to seal a clone, the clone dies (not the original) but the clones chakra never returns to the original (maybe)
so the original is permanently missing that portion of chakra used for that clone. (maybe)

If a clone uses RDS the clone dies & the original (lives?) potentially. Well once you activate the jutsu & steal "soul" of your opponent, you & Shinigami have an agreement that you will also be taken. However, Hiruzen used clones and all three of them simultaneously used the jutsu (at the same time) so they all separately made the agreement. But if Original Hiruzen uses the jutsu before the clones do, then Original Hiruzen dies and the clones also die before they can complete the jutsu. (maybe)
Suicide jutsu rules:
The rules state if you use the jutsu, you will & must automatically die. If bijuu are extracted from jinchuriki, they will & must die.
Minato didn't know whether clones would change the 'above' statements. After extraction, Kushina thought she would still if she pulled the Kyuubi back in, but we later realized if that happens, the jinchuriki would survive. Its too risky to try it in practice with shadow clones, since you don't actually know for yourself, so that's why you only use life/death jutsu when you're in life/death moments.
