That wouldn't surprise me as the author has been making many call backs to the Crocodile Arc.

It really was.

Luffy really used his whits in this battle and the strawhats reached new heights.

Starwhats just entered the Grand line at that point so much to be expected, although reaching the new world they did not struggle much with their current Warlord.
