Maybe it shows that his eye sight was deteriorating.

Maybe as he was losing his light it got thinner and thinner or maybe Kishi just decided to change the design slightly

Or he was getting better at using it so it became more focused as opposed to being so wide. I like the pupils fading symbolizing the light is leaving his eyes idea too.
