A photo of a wife carrying her husband who lost both of his legs to a Taliban IED has received tens of thousands of likes and shares on Facebook.
Former San Diego marine Jesse Cottle was injured in 2009 after stepping on a pressure plate while he attempted to dismantle an explosive device in Afghanistan, a horrific experience he remembers all too well.
"I lost both legs straight away," he said.
"I remember most everything. I was awake the whole time."
One of his fellow marines was wearing a helmet camera during the patrol and captured the explosion, which was used in a documentary about Jesse, titled*Coming Home.
Mr Cottle attributed his recovery to the support of his family and friends and said if it wasn't for his injury, he may never have met his wife, Kelly.
The couple recently posed for the happy snap while visiting Kelly's family in Idaho. At the suggestion of photographer Sarah Ledford, Mr Cottle removed his prosthetic legs for a group shot in the water.
Mrs Cottle lifted her husband onto her back, later explaining "that's how we get around sometimes, like at the beach".
"God bless the both of you and thank you tremendously for your sacrifice for our freedom, you are a hero," one comment read.
Mr Cottle described people's tributes as humbling. "We represent a lot of people, couples that are going through the same thing and so it's an honour to be able to represent that," he said.

It's mind-blowing how some horrific experiences rotate a complete 180 and end up being a happy ending :O
