I thought by now after seeing Madara preform Susanoo with no eyes or Kakashi using kamui Susanoo with no sharingan eyes, that there is a general understanding that power equals chakra.

Your eyes are responsible for showing true potential, it's the chakra level that you posses that counts regardless of what eyes you have.

He did have MS. Those swirly eyes that he had when we first saw him were his mangekyou sharingan, and how would you know that he never lost anybody? It probably is likely that he did lose somebody considering that he started such a long war with his brother. Somebody was bound to have died during that time. Perhaps even some time prior. After all, the purpose of ninshuu was to bring peace to a world that was war torn. Maybe a friend died during some other war. Just because he was prodigious and independent doesn't mean that he never had a single friend in his entire life. Heck, he even found a lover eventually as evidenced by the existence of the Uchiha clan. Just because we never saw him with a friend doesn't mean he never had one. We never saw Shisui lose his best friend either, but we know he had mangekyou sharingan.

He had Rikodu Senjutsu. Same reason why Sasuke and Madara are compatible with Senjutsu.
