It all makes sense now. Hashirama noticed a presence when he killed Madara however he disregarded it. This Presence was the will of Indra which Hashirama may have felt from the will of Ashura inside of him

Hashirama never killed Madara. And it's impossible for him to see Indra, Madara only had Indra's chakra.

Honestly, when I first read that chapter, I never got that impression of someone or something being there at all. People are so obsessed with that thought even though there is absolutely zero evidence...
