I just ran into this interesting news story concerning the conflict between Brazilian indigenous protesters and Brazilian police over the massive "development" undertaking in the run-up to the 2014 World Cup this summer. I am a sports fan like the next person, and I love the international cooperation that the World Cup, Olympics, etc. stand for, but I have to admit there is a real problem when indigenous groups with an ancient claim to land are unceremoniously evicted from that land against their will.
Of course, the eviction of indigenous group is rationalized on the basis of state (national) law. The critical paradox here is that indigenous tribes essentially don't take part in "modern society" and are often marginalized by that society, and therefore see themselves as separate from these laws and subordinate to the laws of their own culture. When one group applies rules to another group that the afflicted party doesn't see as legitimate, you are going to get direct conflict like this.
Here is the article anyway. One police officer was even shot in the leg w/ an arrow as they gassed the crowd. As always, I appreciate your thoughts and comments! =D
