Volkswagen has beaten some brilliant new cars to take the World Car of the Year 2009 gong. Volkswagen America's President Stefan Jacoby picked up the award during a ceremony held at the New York Auto Show.

The Golf pipped the excellent Ford Fiesta and clever new Toyota iQ to the top honour, after the three were chosen as finalists from an initial shortlist of ten. The jurors - a gathering of 59 motoring journalists from 25 countries - eventually plumped for the Golf after deciding it 'feels more expensive than other family hatches, thanks to its solid build and high quality cabin,' and lauding its design, wide choice of engines and overall refinement.

'It is a tremendous honour for Volkswagen to have its global best selling model named the 2009 World Car of the Year. Simply put, we believe this is the best Golf ever,' said Jacoby. The Golf, which has sold over 26 million units in six generations since the original's 1974 debut, replaces the Mazda2 as the reigning world champion. The competition also included prizes for car design of the year, performance car, and green car of the year, taken by the Fiat 500, Nissan GT-R and Honda FCX Clarity respectively.
