Why is it that the resistance isn't called the "new republic's army" or something like that? I mean seemingly the new republic is the new dominant power so there really shouldn't be an army called the "resistance" unless they're separate groups but are allies? I just got back from the movie(which is 9/10 imo) and was wondering this...

Think of The New Republic as America, and the First Order as Syria.

The New Republic exists very far away, but has established a splinter cell, The Resistance, in "Syria (The First Order).

So essentially, the Resistance is funded and supplied by the Republic, but isn't a part of the official military.
