Is it possible that a protagonist may actually be a antagonist, while it may seem odd, but that seems like the very core and nature of the narutoverse. A few examples of protagonist who have gone antagonist is Itachi Uchiha, he killed his entire clan, to stop the coup de oupt that his clansmen planned against the leaf. Another example is Danzo, while having good intentions of protecting the leaf with his own means of way, he comes off rather evil, and malevolent despite what he was trying to accomplish, security for the leaf. Last but not least, Obito Uchiha, a young boy with the desires to become Hokage but is now the Jin of the ten-tails.

To my understanding this isn't just a twist to add suspense on behalf of the story, to me it seems like Kishi is building up a large climatic curve leading up to the ultimate twist to another larger protagonist, the sage of six paths. Remember this is just a theory and I am in no way correct.

When Kishi introduced the sage, Kishi described the sage by listing these facts that become gradually intoduced through the story by important characters. "The Sage of the Six Paths (六道仙人, Rikudō Sennin) was a legendary god-like figure who founded the arts of ninjutsu and created the ninja world. He defeated the Ten-Tails in battle and sealed the beast within his own body, thus becoming the very first jinchūriki." ( )

From this we have an understanding that the sage has a benevolent nature, he cared enough to stopped the opposing threat to humanity, the ten-tails. The sage of six paths even began going around the narutoverse and began preaching about ninjutsu to educate others and to begin a campaign to stop the wars amongst other clans as a means of peace.

"According to Jiraiya, the Sage was a monk who appeared long ago in an age of endless war. He was the first to discover the truth of chakra, and with it he tried to lead the world to an era of peace instead of conflict. He travelled across the land, spreading his ideal and religion, the Shinobi Sect (忍宗, Ninshū), which eventually came to be known as ninjutsu. His great deeds and ultimate desire to bring peace to the war-torn world made him widely known as the Saviour of this World (この世の救世主, Kono Yo no Kyūseishu).[1][2]." ( .)

However, having failed to spread the word of peace because of his death, the sage decided to do one last thing before he left the narutoverse, he needed to separate the 10 tails to create the other 9 tailed beasts.

It may be very possible that the last enemy isn't Obito Uchiha, but the sage himself, having witness history repeat itself within the tailed beasts, he may have became angry at the way humanity is heading.

The Sage was always about peace, he preached it until his death. Yet we know for a fact that there have been plenty of ninja wars in the narutoverse. I believe the current one is the fourth ninja war.

"His great deeds and ultimate desire to bring peace to the war-torn world made him widely known as the Saviour of this World (この世の救世主, Kono Yo no Kyūseishu).[1][2]" ( .)

The Sage loved those tailed beast like they were his own even going as far as to give them each a name. Yet we have humans in the narutoverse who treat the beasts as large chakra war machines, going as far as releasing them onto another country so the beasts can run rampant. Another great example is Madara enslaving the 9 tails to battle against Harashima.

"The Sage also gave names to each of the tailed beasts.[6][7]" ( .)

Recently we have just seen in chapter 638 that it seems Obito is not even himself, stating "Ob...ito?" When The Fourth hokage calls out to Obito, and when Naruto says something about the Jinjurikin, Obito responds with "Jinjur...ikin?" Many people believe that Obito has lost control and it is the Ten-tails who has control, however I believe it is actually the sage of Six paths. Remember Kuruma who is part of the ten-tails tells Naruto that the Ten-tails has no conscious of its own, so it cannot think for it self.

In conclusion I believe The Sage is very much like how Danzo is, with a high belief that something must be done to stop the way humanity is going in narutoverse. Humanity will inevitably destroy itself, because if it sticks to an archaic ninja system that many main antagonist express needs a large reform (Obito, Nagato) it will eventually cause the end of the world. In the end I believe the person who has taken control of Obito is most likely The Sage of six paths, and he will use his means of way to teach the narutoverse of its wrongdoing.

TL;DL Sage of six paths has taken control of Obito now, not Ten-Tails. Sage will destroy the world, and will force the nations to work together to stop him, eventually teaching them that peace amongst other is the way to go.

Sorry for no pictures, but most of this should already be known.
