Before everyone panicks, especially NaruHina fans:

According to Manga Stream's translation, after Minato asks if Sakura is Naruto's girlfriend, Naruto answers back:

"Yeah, you could say that.... if you're splitting hairs".

So that there is not a NaruSaku for the time being.

He basically said "Yeah she's my girlfriend if you ignore some unimportant details."

He said Sakura is his girlfriend. Even if it isn't true, it shows he has a desire for Sakura to be his GF. Suck it up, NaruHina.

Something that's trivial.

It's all good. It's a comedic touch to the chapter. It won't happen. Not without a price. Either Sasuke dies somehow and Sakura is with Naruto, or Sasuke tells Sakura to take a hike. Either one will fill the hole that would be made inside my soul if Naruto actually is with Sakura, but we all know it won't happen :D

Hinata didn't even care when Naruto said that. WHAT A GIRL LADIES AND GENTLEMAN ; u ;

No, it means more like, yeah, you could say that... if you want to argue about small differences or unimportant details. Basically he is saying it is almost like she is, but it is not official.

I'm not a native speaker of English, but the phrase translated into my language (unless the dictionary was mistaken), was a bit cynical, sort of "Yeah, you could say she is my girlfriend but by making a great effort with your mind", suggesting that it might be impossible to consider Sakura as Naruto's girlfriend.

It is exactly opposite :p splitting hairs is supposed to represent small or unimportant differences. He is trying to say that there is a small difference from her being his girlfriend and what she is to him now. It means that either way you look at it, it still clearly shows his love interest in her.

What Naruto really said will not be revealed until we get the Japanese version and translate it for ourselves. Often times I have read things on mangapanda and ***********, and they are both mistranslated. I went to the convenience store yesterday and actually read last week's Shonen Jump.. no where does Madara call anyone "fodder," or a lot of the other interpretations used. With this said, Naruto represents two things to Kishimoto. One, as we have come to love, is the telling of the story of a pariah turning into a messiah of sorts. However, and this is important, Naruto as a series also represents income to Kishimoto. He is very aware of what the fans look at. There are fan books after all, in addition to fan polls. These are all taken into consideration when he writes, and it also keeps him from making somethings concrete. Minato vs Itachi, Naruto/Hinata vs Naruto/Sakura...these are all things that keep fans reading. If he were to make things definite, large sections of the fanbase would react negatively, affecting sales, etc.

This chapter only confirms the status quo. Hinata still has feelings for Naruto, Naruto is still not sure of where things really stand with him and Sakura in his own head, Sakura is still reproachful towards Naruto deciding their relationship status of his own accord, and Sasuke is still seemingly apathetic to it all. And it may continue in this vein until Kishimoto decides to break bases.

Naruhina still stands because Naruto just said that to make Sakura understand his desire while they are not and won't be together. Hinata will still have her way with Naruto because she doesn't care of expressing her feelings to Naruto whom started to like her on a higher level.

I think the bigger thing here is that Minato stated that sakura reminded him of kushina. also before kushina died she wished for naruto to find a girl like her.. idk just something to think about :/

Thanks for the feedback! What is confusing is the way in which Naruto starts the sentence: ¨

"Yeah, you could say that.... if you're splitting hairs".

I originally understood something like "Actually, no, unless you're splitting hairs"
