So I actually whole hardheartedly believe that Boruto will unlock the Byakugan.
WHY?!
I believe that Boruto's current eye is a evolution or mutation of the Byakugan and may be the bridge between the Byakugan and the Tenseigan.
Call it the MS of the byakugan for now.
But before that let us step back before the Boruto movie and Boruto Manga/TV series began.
Kishimoto said in a interview that he forgot to give Himawari and Boruto the byakugan even though he intended to do so in the first place.
He made of for this by having Himawari awaken the eye via emotions in the Naruto oneshot/OVA (The day Naruto became Hokage).
This one shot occurred before the Boruto movie aired and was later included as a OVA with the movie release.
In before that Kishi did a sketch of Boruto... The first ever exposure of the kid to the public for the LAST Naruto the movie.
Here as well as in the SP movie concept art we see Boruto or Bolt with the Hyuga crest.
We also saw Sarada have a sketch via Kishi in a magazine were he had the Haruno crest as well as the sharingan.
Kishi had in mind the Hyuga origin of the child since the beginning. SP was even confused about the child (Boruto) and had the kid have lavender eyes as a child but changed it to a blue colour later on.
But this problem of making a mistake eventually helped Kishi in the long run. With a large lack of Hyuga/Byakugan based lore and development and this current conundrum that Kishi was facing he opted to use that blunder as an asset.
Low and behold the one of the main plots for Boruto the series, Boruto's eye!
As we know we currently don't know anything about this eye but are able to put some stuff together via scenarios in the manga and the anime to try and understand what it truly is.
Momo implied that Naruto didn't pass on that much to Boruto.
Boruto isn't able to do shadow clones like his father and has limitations.
Boruto meets Toneri the main antagonist in a movie about the Byakugan/Tenseigan.
Boruto anime focuses on the Hyuga when Kishi particularly gets involved. Hanabi tells Boruto to see her again if anything happens.
Boruto's name is a play on from his Uncle's name Neji.
Sarada and Momo point out Boruto's eye colour, which is lighter then Naruto's. He and his sister have the same eye pigment.
The Byakugan can apparently be awakened via training for individuals with Hyuga Blood. The exception is Hima who just unlocked it at a young age out of emotions. There is also proof of this via the Itachi Shinden novel.
Boruto apparently does some Hyuga based training at home and is ranted on for not using the Hyuga fighting style when sparring with Hanabi.
Boruto claiming to unlocking the Byakugan makes Hiashi and Naruto question him, not because he can't do it but rather he lacks the required Hyuga training.
Kishi did a promotional art with Boruto with the Byakugan
And there is a ton more that suggests that he will eventually unlock it.
What I want to extract from this is that Boruto may likely have the byakugan like his sister but is barred from using it due to the majority of his body/chakra/etc... is copping with the burden of weilding his new eye.
In the Last we saw that Toneri went through difficulty when Hanabi's eyes were transforming into the Tenseigan.
Of course Boruto's parents have Hamura and Hagoromo chakra but I believe that they don't have all the assets to completely be Ooostutski chakra based.
Also we don't see Boruto suffering the same way that Toneri did.
Likely what Boruto has is in between the Byakugan and the Tenseigan. Toneri likely knows this and is likely going to help Boruto out.
Momo likely also knows this and later gives Boruto a Ootuski curse seal to push the eye further via maturation and evolution.
What I believe is that in one point or time Boruto will overuse his new eye which will likely lead it to be gone for some time due to prematurely overusing it.
Maybe via the episodes coming up. This will also explain as to why Boruto didn't have the eye during the Boruto the movie.
As his eye recharges post the Boruto the movie, likely Sasuke will take charge in trying to connect the dots.
We know that Sasuke knows that Boruto got a curse seal, maybe Boruto will also talk to Sasuke about his eye.
SP and Kishi will likely stretch out this eye development akin to how they stretched out Naruto using the Kyuubi chakra.
That will mean like Jirayai taught Naruto.... Sasuke will bring Boruto back to the basics.
So in order to use his curse mark and in order to revive his new eye again Boruto will need to awaken the Byakugan.
And when he does this will lead to Boruto also learning other Hyuga things and maybe even awaken his other Hyuga KKG like his sister the GF.
With Sasuke's teaching and Boruto learning Hyuga based techniques, we will likely see a merger of two characters.
Sasuke will teach Boruto, sword style but Boruto can merge that with GF to cover all bases
Add Chidori and....
Boruto will be a Neji and Sasuke Hybrid.
