First off I know this thread has been made before but it has never been made in detail and hasn't been updated to what has happened in more recent chapters. Perfect susanoo will not be included because its obvoiusly going to win. Instead it will be substituted with itachi's and sasuke's susanoo. Don't comment if your not going to read.

Shinra Tensei

Strengths

Note: This is coming from the naruto wiki

Shinra Tensei is the Deva Path's ability to manipulate repulsive force (斥力, sekiryoku) at the user's will to push matter or ninja techniques[1] away. Depending on the amount of force the user puts in this technique, it can easily shatter wood, bones, metal, or stone walls. By using this technique as a defensive measure, all attacks directed to the user will be deflected, no matter the size, power or mass. It can also be used to repel flames caught on the user's body.

This makes its very versatile and can even blow away the flames of amatarasu

overall this is the most deadly defense because it can be fatal when used and it cant be penetrated when used.
Weaknesses

The only downside to this technique is that there is a short period when it is unusable after being used. The minimal time period is about five seconds, but it varies depending on the amount of power put into the attack.

Though this downside on paper doesnt sound like much, agaisnt a fast opponent like Minato or A it can lead to your downfall. Especially when you use it on a larger scale like Deva path did on Konoha its cooldown time can reach up to several minutes.

If you have prior knowledge of this technique or figure out its weakness in the midst of battle it can prove fatal to the user. A distraction to make the user force themselves to use this technique then a surprise attack is a strategy that can overwhelm the user.

Susanoo

Strengths

Susanoo is an incredibly powerful defense. Sasukes ribcage form was enough to protect him from a technique as strong Liger Bomb and survive which no person has before. At an imperfect form it was strong enough to wistand multiple attacks at the same time from Gaara, Darui, Temari, and Kankoro without breaking noticeably.

If you add the yata mirror to susanoo like itachi it becomes virtually unstoppable. Even able to wistand a technique as powerful as kirin arguably the strongest lightning technique. Danzo's vaccum bullets couldnt penetrate it unless he aimed for the weakest point which still barely broke it.

It is arguably the strongest mangekyo sharingan technique due to its immense defense. It is the most versatile of all the defenses (even more than shinra tensei and gaara's ultimate defense) in the series shown thus far. It also as a bonus can be used offensively which makes this technique even more deadly then it was before.

Weaknesses

Like the other techniques granted by the Mangekyō Sharingan, the user's eyes and body are strained while using Susanoo because it consumes a large amount of their chakra. Sasuke described it as feeling pain in every cell in his body which only grew from prolonged use.Despite Susanoo's impressive defensive capabilities, the protection it grants its user is not absolute. The user can be thrown out of the upper half of Susanoo by an enemy manipulating the substance underneath Susanoo. This was seen when Gaara used his sand to pull Madara out of his Susanoo.[6] Also, a sufficiently powerful attack will still result in damage, especially during the technique's developmental stages. The only known ways to attack the user while Susanoo is active is either to draw the wielder out of the technique and then attack,[6] bind and restrict its movements, or to break the defence with overwhelming force. Susanoo users are also vulnerable to attacks which don't actually deal physical damage to it, such as strong lights and sounds, that can also impair their ability to sustain Susanoo.[7] Sound-based genjutsu can also bypass Susanoo's impressive defence.

Though it sounds like the weaknesess completely ruin the defensive capabilties of this technique dont count it out yet. Only the strongest of techniques can bypass susanoo which seems like a meager feat in the quote above. It shouldnt be taken lightly but due to its weaknesess it makes this technique breakable and definetly not invincible.

Lightning Armor

Strengths

The armour increases the user's defences, drastically reducing, if not completely negating, damage from incoming attacks as seen when A deflected a back attack from Sasuke's Sword of Kusanagi: Chidori Katana

The lightning armor is the most powerful armor imo. In the third raikages hands this armor is virtually indestructible not even a rasenshuriken could break it despite it having an elemental advantage and being the arguably the strongest wind technique in the series shown thus far (even attacking the victims cells in the process).

In terms of raw defense this one definetely wins. The thing that balances it out with the others is that its the only elemental defense that is in this thread which makes it have a counter. Wind.
Weaknesses
Primarily wind is its weakness. Though a higher level lightning technique will also work. Primarily the hell stab. The true weakness of the lightning armor is its strength. Unless you are very careful and intelligent the strength of this technique can be your downfall. If you rely on it to much and think its unbeatable your own technique might be your downfall. The same thing happened to the third raikage, ironically the only thing shown to pierce his lightning armor was his own one finger hell stab. Never make your sword stronger than your shield.

Also another weakness to this technique is of course its elemental advantage wind. Rubber guy said that only a powerful wind technique can pierce his armor. So far nothing has been shown to support this (i forgot if temari pierced his armor with cast net or not couldnt find where it was stated). Though since it was mentioned it should be considered a possible weakness.

Gaara's ultimate defense

Strengths

A technique that is unique to Gaara. Whenever Gaara is about to be harmed, a shield of sand will automatically surround and protect him. The sand will react regardless of Gaara's will, even protecting him from self-inflicted injuries.

In Part I, the shield was formidable in both speed and strength — capable of withstanding considerably strong attacks and blocking fast projectiles. However, it could be defeated with extreme speeds and a great amount of brute force, as was the case with Rock Lee's Reverse Lotus. Later, in Part II, Gaara's sand shield became so fast that even Amaterasu failed to breach it,[2] and his sand shield became so strong that even the extreme force of A's Guillotine Drop failed to crush through it. The Shield of Sand and the Armour of Sand together were known as Gaara's "Absolute Defence" (絶対防御, Zettai Bōgyo), well known and praised by even Naruto, who had just witnessed the Third Raikage's defences.

This defense unlike the others is automatic and will protect you regardless of your knowledge of the attack which makes it a excellent supplementary defense and exceptonal in battle. On top of its already ridicolously fast defense it has the sand armor that covers around gaara if someone breachs it which is rare already.

It unlike the others has a "backup plan" in which if the shield of sand gets breached he has his sand armor to protect him from a fatal attack.

Weaknesses

Though the weakneses of this sand were reduced in part 2 the main componets stay the same. The main weakness is of course speed. Though it has improved someone like Minato, A, and KM Naruto might be able to breach it. Another weakness is the chakra consumption of the sand armor. Though it will save your life if the shield of sand is breached it costs a hefty amount of chakra and you likely wouldnt be able to use as freely as the shield of sand. Another weakness and likely the biggest weakness is oil.

This was shown throughout Gaara's battle with the second mizukage so I wont link it considering it was in many pages and it is easy to find. The oil will literally destroy and crumble the sand which makes it almost useless. This weakness really hurts the ultimate defense and could definetly hurt it in the long run. Though unless you specialize in toad summons or are the Second Mizukage this weakness only applies to specific characters.

The best defense is in fact Tobi's ghost mode. Doesn't seem to be in any way chakra taxing, survives all attacks, and can be held for 5 minutes at a time, which is MORE than enough barring Konan's technique.

My opinion is that it would go to gaara due to the versatility and always being active unlike Shinra tensei and the draining nature of susanoo

Lightning release can easily be neutralized by insulators such as Wind Release techs and even oil based techs.

You really deserve more attention on this thread and hopefully you will get it

If I had to choose from those, I would agree with Negative Knights choice of Gaara's sand.

Susanoo is too chakra taxing, but as a defense on it's own, it'll block more attacks than Gaara's sand. But since it takes a lot of chakra, it's not as useful as Gaara's in my opinion.

Lightning Armor is taxing/can be countered much more easily.

Shinra Tensei will stop the most attacks, but that 5 second interval is too much for it to be the best defense.

There's no point in making a post like this. It would have been much easier to just post the poll and asked "which do you think is the strongest defense?".

Why? Because most won't even read the first post and will vote and post in the thread, saying something that is completely wrong and was cleared up in the first post, and that they should know in the first place, considering, practically everything you typed or pasted in to your post would be known by anyone who has read the manga.

Of those, personally, I would go with Gaara's defense.

I would chose lightning armor for normal attacks. But for attacks like a TBB i would want a jutsu like Triple Rashōmon.

Another defense that could be added is 8 trigrams palm rotation. Its actually fairly powerful despite how underrated it is, and I can give a full explanation detailing how powerful it really is.

what about space time barrier, tobis intangibility, kakuzus doton domu, sasoris iron sand, preta path, triple rashomon, good old fashioned dodging, third raikages skin?
his skin is seemingly tough as shit just like his regular armour. what about kimimaros bones.

2. Izanagi
3. Minato's Flying Thunder God Teleport + Space Time Barrier
4. Advanced Kwarimis (Orochimaru's and Killer B's)
5. Sennin Modo (Sensing + Enhanced Durability + Enhanced Regeneration)
6. Suika no Jutsu
7. Bijuu Chakra Shroud
8. Advanced Clone Techniques
9. Fūjutsu Kyūin

Also I don't think there is a single best defensive technique, since how good the technique is depends on the shinobi using it.

I would say Lighting Armor because it not only boost Endurance but Speed so you could dodge any attacks and if it does hit you the damage its drastically reduced. Gaara's Defense doesnt impress me really only thing i could give credit for is that it's flexible but it doesnt tank much.

I don't think that the Perfect Susano'o would win at all. I'm giving this to Shinra Tensei, while I do see the merit in Gaara's defense, to be sure. If the Iron Sand technique that Sandaime Kazekage used was there, I would personally place that at the top. I'm choosing Shinra Tensei again, for its versatility. It has either great destructive power, or force enough to knock enemies away to make that 3-4 second lapse seem like nothing. Who knows, you may even kill the ****er.

Some of you say Gaaras sand isn't chakra taxing but is that really so? Or is it because Gaara himself has incredible chakra reserves considering he had the body to handle a bijuu. Also recieving 5's in the stamina department.

Out of this list Susanoo has been the most impressive but it also depends alot if the user has EMS or MS. Lightning Armour takes alot of chakra has well. Shinra Tensei seems like a good choice to me but the 5 second interval hurts alot. :ice:
