Sorry I haven't updated quick enough. I feel this chapter lacks sufficient description; it has way more dialogue. (Compared to the last chapter.)
“It is a time machine”
A brief bone chilling silence met Sai’s lifeless words, as the giant, dimly lit room began to thicken with tension till –
“Eh, ‘Tiiime Maachine’?” Naruto Uzumaki asked stupidly, rubbing his chin and scrutinizing the mysterious device that stood at the centre of the room. Standing beside Naruto, Sakura Haruno’s gaze broke away from the strange machine, and a sense of excitement tickled in her chest as she stared at Sai with a shocked expression.
“N-no way! You mean those fabled devices that could send you to the past?!” She asked sharply.
“Danzo has been secretly developing this for years,” Sai replied, nodding. “Scientists and researchers from all nations have been here to play a role in perfecting it. Of course, they never came out of here alive.”
Ignoring the chilling feeling she felt in response to his words, Sakura crossed her arms and looked at the device skeptically.
“Does it actually work?” She asked, raising her pink eyebrows.
“It has successfully sent test subjects back to the past, but only by a few minutes. However, a few months ago, Danzo claimed the machine was complete.”
“How does it work?” Sakura inquired curiously.
“I don’t know exactly – I was never really acquainted with the machine.” Sai began, gesturing towards it. “But basically you would have to enter how far back you would be going into the computer, and then wear the headset. Once you feel ready, you would press the activation button and be sent.”
“’Sent’…back to the past?” Naruto mused. “So I could go back to the past and talk to myself?”
Sai shook his head.
“It’s your conscience that moves. Your current conscience or state of mind would be combined with your past-self. I’m sorry,” Sai apologized abruptly, as he saw the two friends exchange looks of confusion. “It’s difficult to explain.”
“Nah, na! Don’t worry,” Naruto grinned, shaking his head. “You just want us to guard this while you talk to Tsunade – baachan, right? Then I don’t have to understand!” And with that, he rested his hands behind his head, smiling with relief.
“Right,” Sai gave a stiff nod. “Be vigilant. They’ve been acting odd. I think a few members were assigned to go back and prevent Danzo from dying.”
Sakura’s eyes narrowed.
“How do you know they haven’t already gone?” She asked suspiciously.
“Because then we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Sai looked at her seriously, crossing his arms. “When you go to the past and change something, then the future, or rather, the present, would be altered. Think of it as a drawing. You draw a picture, but then you want to erase it and start over again. You then draw a second picture, but its different from the first, which is now completely gone. Similarly, when you go to the past, the current reality changes. And just how you wouldn’t remember exactly how to sketch the first drawing, no one else would have any memories of the previous reality.”
Sakura nodded slowly; it was beginning to make sense.
“Eh…I don’t really understand.”Naruto groaned, scratching his head.
“Don’t worry, you just need to protect it.” Sai assured him. “I think they’ve been stalling out of fear, but they may take their last chance while I’m gone to inform the Hokage.”
“YOSH!!” Naruto exclaimed, enthusiastically punching his fist in the air. “Sounds like a mission! We’ll do it!” He gave Sai a Gai-worthy thumbs up.
Before taking his leave and blending quietly into the darkness, Sai gave a small honest smile and said softly,
“I trust you.”
