But today, while there are still racists, it's not like that anymore. For the most part, your skin color is just skin. Yes, I know that race can have some influence, but i just don't see the point of saying you're proud of your skin.
That is an Americanized view of race.

Serbs... Croats... Can't tell the damned difference, myself.
They can. They've killed each other over it, before.
Race is generally a political issue for that very purpose - to separate people into groups so that they can attack each other.
Being proud of one's culture, heritage, and lineage is what most mean by being proud of his/her "race." It's just that we all live under political institutions that gain power from us seeking to kill and/or dominate one another. Which is why race is routinely fabricated out of some cultural or hereditary distinction by politicians for the purpose of obtaining power.
My ancestors who came to this country from Germany were treated just as bad (if not worse) as most blacks in this nation. Little targeting of them occurred by national government and national programs (partly because the distinction was not as immediately obvious). They learned the language, applied their trades, and assimilated into our society (and actually played a huge role in developing America during its industrial expansion eras).
Race comes down to politics. It's a tool for dividing and conquering people.
We should all be knowledgeable and proud of our culture and lineage; but we should not allow ourselves to divide so easily over the ramblings of politicians and warlords.
