I assume it's more character-based than 'nerf'. Kishi doesn't really care about that stuff because he's managing an actual narrative not a sports league.

Likely something to atone for his sins or remind him of that battle. Power-wise it doesn't really affect much of his fighting style so it might just be a cool design choice.
