Genjutsu doesn't t produce a real, palpable, feasible effect, it produces an illusionary effect. With a specific KG however, the illusions can become so strong that the body will be fooled into mimicking in real life the fake effects its perceiving through the illusion. Such as "Tskuyomi" used by Uchiha Itachi
There exists two main types of Genjutsu: the passive, non chakra fueled ones and the active, chakra fueled ones. Within the active chakra fueled ones 3 subtypes exist: Doujutsu enabled Genjutsu, Sound Genjutsu and Normal Genjutsu.
Genjutsu works by using chakra to disturb the chakra flow of the opponent, specially (but not limited to) in the brain, altering his senses. By doing this you can make him perceive any thing his senses are capable of: pain, heat, cold, tickles, iching, visions, sounds, etc etc. A ninja can make the opponent taste, smell, feel, see or hear anything he wants. However, because this is done by using your chakra to manipulate his chakra flow, the ninja needs to be close or, many times, have a direct sensory link towards the opponent (Eye Contact, Sound, etc). This is the main limitation of Genjutsu: range. The further you are away from your opponent, the harder it is to induce the fluctuation on his chakra flow to produce the genjutsu.
I would say the top 5 genjutsu users would be ;
- 5.Lady Shima and Lord Fugasaku
Both of them are extremely powerful and can use an extremely strong auditory Genjutsu called Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. It is almost impossible to escape from this genjutsu because it’s auditory. Also, it is a genjutsu of high level. - 4.Obito Uchiha
Obito was the former ninja of Konoha and the member of the Akatsuki. He was an excellent Genjutsu user. Obito was able to cast Genjutsu on a perfect Jinchūriki, which is not an easy thing to do. Furthermore, he was also able to cast genjutsu on Tailed Beasts. - 3. Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke could use Genjutsu Sharingan for various purposes. After receiving the Six Paths chakra he got a unique six tomoe Rinnegan. He could even place all the tailed beasts under genjutsu with his Rinnegan. Sasuke was also able to counter the effects of Mugen Tsukuyom - 2. Itachi Uchiha
He is known to possess one of the strongest genjutsus in Naruto. Itachi possessed Tsukuyomi in his left eye. When he used Tsukuyomi on an opponent, the opponent would be trapped in a world that was manipulated by Itachi. Even a second’s torture would feel like a day’s torture. A highly skilled ninja such as Kakashi was almost killed by Itachi’s Tsukuyomi. Itachi could cast the genjutsu by just pointing at his opponent. - 1. Shisui Uchiha
Shisui possessed the Kotoamatsukami, which was known to be the strongest genjutsu after Mugen Tsukuyomi. Shisui could put person under his genjutsu and give the person false experiences. The person would get the feeling that they were doing it at their own free will. Shisui’s ability was feared by everyone. Even Itachi admitted that Shisui’s genjutsu casting abilities far better than his.

First set is these. The first technique involves the user making the target believe the terrain has changed; the change is only limited to your imagination. But do keep in mind that's that the only thing you can do with this Genjutsu. The second one, however, requires a bunch of hanseals and you dissolve into a cherry blossom petals to confuse the opponent. Never found this appealing at all personally, though.

*Kakashi focuses his chakra and tries to cast a genjustu on Klad sensei which changes the terrain by changing the nearby teal lake into lava. He fails at first try.*
Kakashi: This is harder than i tought it would be.
*Kakashi concentrates again and this time he tries to cast the genjustu to change the terrain by changing the greeny grass that both klad sensei kakashi is standing on into water. Which cost him little amount of his chakra

*After this Kakashi takes a deep breath and focuses his chakra and tries to make the five handseals but gets mixed up with wrong hand seals. He tries it again but this time he fails at the 4th hand seal.*
Kakashi; Hand Seals what a drag.
*Kakashi gives one last try this time putting all his effort and makes 5 hand seals correctly. But nothing happens.*
Kakashi; Whats this suppose to do?
*After few seconds, he starts seeing parts of his body turning into flower petals.Kakashi says to himself "This is the most rridiculous genjutsu ever.*

Kakashi thinks to himself " This is pretty harder than i thought ".
Kakashi looks carefully at Klad sensei and tries to concentrete his chakra on the hand seal, At first it doesnt work. Then he tries a different hand seal which still doesnt work. Kakashi puts all of his focus on remebering the handseal and this time he succeeds in it. Thesn throws a Paper bomb at Klad sensei which time he misses. He gives it one last try and succeeds in both the hand seal and pinpointning the paperbomb.

So basically the next technique is an advance version of this huh?
After succeeding with the previous technique he was very confident that he could do this technique pretty easily as his adreline was boosted. Kakashi takes no time and moves on to it. Kakashi steps farther away from Klad sensei about mid range, focuses his chakra and performs the genjustu which allows him to create clones from the greeny grass below him and Klad sesnei. However, his clones wasnt made appropraitely meaning he failed even the confident.
"One blow isnt going to let me down".
Kakashi tries this time again, which he creates the clones perfectly and performing the technique with ease.
This is like Shadow clone jutsu but with Genjutsu?

I would first attack one of the clones and if multipes i would it was the Mist Servant Techniqueg. I would break out of it by simply tricking the user that i am out of chakra by placing a shadow clone and making it act weak so the user would come forth and deactivate the genjutsu. Or i can counter it by harming myself in a way , as a pain outside the genjutsu would break me out of it.
( Magen: Narakumi ) - Demonic Illusion: Hell Viewing
A practically useless technique in combat unless you really know the opponent you are facing. It's basically a Genjutsu which makes the enemy see what they fear the most. However, it's not that much effective seeing as it's only D-rank.
(Genjutsu: Kawarimi ) Illusion Technique: Substitution
This Genjutsu is mainly used to evade small scaled attacks. It's multi-rank, so the higher the rank, the stronger the illusion this technique creates. When you are put againt an attack, you will cast an illusion on the opponent and produce an illusionary copy of yourself in your place, and you yourself will run away/hide/evade the attack. The opponent, trapped inside the genjutsu, will believe that he got you until his attack connects with you, at which point the illusion will disperse,, and reveal the true location of the user. You should sustain this illusion so that's a great disadvantage since you cannot do anything to trigger an offensive action; otherwise the illusion will break prematurely. Quite strategical and can be really hard to detect if used right, as it purely depends on the nature of the user.

A simple technique, this genjutsu works solely as a defensive measure. The user will produce an illusionary copy of himself while he escapes the path/area of the attack with a rapid movement, unnoticed and masked by the technique. The enemy will see and hear the user in the original place until the attack connects with the illusionary copy, at which point it will disperse, revealing the true location of the user. The technique can be controlled so as to have the illusionary copy interact and talk in specific ways with the enemy for other purposes, while the user remains hidden from the targets perception. The illusion is often personalized from user to user, namely in its dispersion, sometimes in relation to the users elemental affinity or summoning companions, following a theme unique to him. The limitation is that the user cannot escape large techniques with this ability nor incredibly fast ones, since the escape is his movement and, as such, is limited to small scaled attacks or normal paced ones. Only techniques which can be escaped by moving out of their way running or through movement can be defended from with this. The main limit however, is that, since its a sustainable illusion, triggering any offensive action towards the target will immediately release the illusion, be it a simple taijutsu move or a ninjutsu attack; any aggressive action the user wants to take will immediately break his focus and control over the technique, releasing the target from it. The stronger the user is with the usage of Genjutsu, the more effective and strong the illusion will be and more times can it be used.
Note: This version can only be used by ninjas without a Sharingan.
