From what I know about genjutsu is that the user inserts their chakra within the opponents mind, making them believe/show something that isn't really there. By doing this, it disrupts the opponents chakra since it's off balanced from the chakra the user put within them. The range of genjutsu that can be used it highly dependent on the user since they can make it very simple like seeing something or someone hurt to you being tortured for a long period of time.
Some well known users of genjutsu are Kurenai, Itachi, Sasuke, Shisui, Madara, Tayuya, Obito, The frog elders.

How to dispel a Genjutsu and why
Simple answer lies in what is a Genjutsu. Genjutsu is a disruption of your normal chakra flow that makes you experience an illusion as it scrambles your chakra. We have gone through that so you might ask how does this help?
Ok, if a Genjutsu is a disruption in your own chakra flow, to dispel it you need to create a stronger disruption that will clear that one and leave your chakra on its normal state. So basically, there is only one way to dispel genjutsu: disrupting your chakra flow.
Now, this can be done in 3 basic ways:
1- Altering the balance between physical and spiritual energies in your chakra by disturbing your physical energy. This is done by producing pain. Pain comes from the body and thus it makes your physical energy fluctuate. Because of this fluctuation your chakra flow experiences a spike. This spike is a disturbance that will dispel other disturbances present in your chakra.
2- Altering the balance between physical and spiritual energies in your chakra by disturbing your spiritual energy. This is done by your sheer will power. Its done by forcefully creating a surge of chakra in your body by spiking your spiritual energy. It can be done in 2 ways: through a technique named Kai and through other techniques, like Nagashi, that will produce a high enough surge of chakra through your body.
3- Altering your chakra flow through the introduction of foreign chakra. This can be done by an ally or by entering for example, sage mode or being a jinchuriki. The truth is that as foreign chakra enters your system or another energy (natural energy), your chakra flow becomes altered and thus releases from the genjutsu.
All of these produce a reset-like effect on your chakra flow, making it return to normal.

Genjutsu, or Illusionary Arts, unlike ninjutsu, don't produce a real, palpable, feasible effect; it produces an illusionary effect. With a specific KG however, the illusions can become so strong that the body will be fooled into mimicking in real life the fake effects its perceiving through the illusion. The ratio between them vary from person to person (that is how each person has a different chakra signature) but its always calm and balanced. To produce a genjutsu, a ninja uses his chakra to disturb that balance in a controlled way. This is done in a similar way to ninjutsu, throught both focusing and molding chakra. A fluctuation is then created in the targets chakra "wave length" and makes it fluctuate in a given way. Okay so, here I would like you to focus your chakra towards my clone and insert it into its brain; that makes him believe that the surrounding area has changed, but of course within reason. This technique can only change the way the area looks, can't do anything else besides that. So you could change the terrain to rocky area, green plains and even a desert, but you have to be smart about it.

Neji concentrating his chakra would begin inserting it into the clones head. In doing so, this would give the clone a unsightly feeling. The illusion Neji happen to cast upon the clone was that he is in an area of all quicksand to which, he's sinking to.

Ah, perform the seal and repeat the process of inserting your chakra into my clone. While you're doing that, get a paper bomb ready and then throw it at the clone, the clone will see a clone of you racing towards him, but really it's actually a paper bomb, and once the paper bombs comes within the area of them, it goes boom. IT would be nice if this was longer, like mid-range. But you could still pull this off nicely.

This technique doesn't need any seals to perform it, as well it goes up to mid-range. I think all you have to do is look at them, this technique allows you to cast a illusion over your target, he will see many clones of you, coming out of the ground and trees, well pretty much all around them. And, if the clones are attacked, they will double, and keep doubling. Use this with the actual shadow clones technique, it would work oh so very well.

Looking onto the clone created by his Sensei he begins to place chakra within his opponents head as he would make a single hand sign with his right hand. Once done, he'd continue forth by throwing a paper bomb towards the opponent. In the mind of the opponent, the paper bomb is a shadow clone that is charging forth. As the clone would run towards the so called clone, he'd make contact as the bomb goes boom!

With another clone being summoned, Neji would insert his chakra into his opponents mind. As he does this, many clones begin to appear around the enemy, around 20 or so. As they would emerge all around, the clone would panic and attack a clone. As the clone would be attacked it would begin to multiple as it keeps being taken down. Swarming the field that clone would just freeze up from the sheer numbers and give up and Neji would throw a simple kunai at the clone to end its time.
(Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu) - Mist Servant Technique

This technique doesn't any damage, but it will give them a small shock, and if you're lucky they will faint.

After performing two hand signs, Neji would begin concentrating his chakra into his opponents head. From their side they'll see a ton of leaves swirling around them as they are confused on what's going on, however, moments later the leaves disperse. As the leaves would vanish in the moment an image or sight of their greatest fear would emerge. As it would be out this would shock the clone as it was completely unexpected and faint moments after.

Okay so this technique can only work on an already moving target, one you insert your chakra into their brain, they will think they are moving in a straight line, but really they are going in circles, this gen will make them move all the time, and if you are able to pull this off, the target will be exhausted in a few short hours. Range is neat too.

Okay this technique only works on non-moving targets they either have to be standing still [which is unlikely] or you have trapped them down somehow, then by using touch you have placed them in a genjutsu, this gen convinces them to give out information they usually wouldn't. But, this technique only works on ninja that are two ranks lower then you, the caster.
