If you were to write a novel, would you use a fictional location or a real-life one?

Fictional is always better in my opinion but if its real life location people can sometimes relate too what your talking about.

Fictional, you can make the story more flexible, and you dont have to research other locations and learn their culture for your story.

Fictional is what I would recommend, You can insert your own scenery and have anything that you would like to see in it. Then again, a real life location is a good option but you will have to try to catch the atmosphere of the place you writing about. And it's extremely hard if you've never been there in the flesh.

Depends. You can make it like inception where as it draws from a location but its completely original.
Example: Republic city (avatar lok): The concept of Republic City is inspired by several real world past and present locations from the late 1800s to the 1930s. This includes Shanghai circa 1920s, Hong Kong, and Western cities such as New York, Chicago, and Vancouver. In particular, the giant Aang statue, the huge park, and the bridge are inspired by the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Brooklyn Bridge, respectively, in New York City.

That really depends on your interests and skills as a writer and the story you want to write. You can even get away with not actually naming the location. xd
