From a simple, linear plot-view I can see what you mean, but once you start looking at it as an endless possibility timeline everything is possible without any certainty. Look at Road to Ninja. Naruto is called Menma there. Just one example of how things can be altered.

Kind of agree with you that things may not work in a fashion as I see. If there had been no war and no instability and no mad Madara, Obi to and Itachi may have also had a chance at being Hokage.
