If the US went to Iraq for oil... Why don't we get oil from them?

15 years later were still waiting for those imaginary weapons of mass destruction to show up.

change the subject though.

The claim was WMD's. The counter claim to not finding them was that we were stealing their oil. That's obviously false.

The United States government obviously isn't drilling in Iraq themselves, but the large corporations that lobby our politicians and pushed for the war are. After Iraq was taken there were numerous oil contracts made by Shell, BP, etc.

And here's the Iraq Oil Law, a law passed by the Iraqi cabinet (which was formed and backed by the U.S.) to allow large oil corporations to privately invest and develop long term refineries.

So that justifies the killing of millions destroyed neighborhoods, business, and families on a false claim of weapons?

It doesn't at all. The UN did extensive research in Iraq and advised the US to not go to war due to no evidence yet we did anyways.

I've asked this many times before but never got a straight answer. Somoene tried to convince me that they were taking barrels out of Iraq via the Navy. :lol.

Most people wouldn't even know we get a good portion of our oil from Canada.

The article says Emerson was in it too.

Also this:

"Prior to the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq, US and other western oil companies were all but completely shut out of Iraq's oil market," oil industry analyst Antonia Juhasz told Al Jazeera. "But thanks to the invasion and occupation, the companies are now back inside Iraq and producing oil there for the first time since being forced out of the country in 1973."

So I'm assuming you think because they are not American companies, America can't profit from them?

And why would the origin of the companies matter? It's the fact that they've had long term lobbyists and investments in the United States that makes this alarming. They obviously used a U.S. led war to reach a massive resource. The U.S. even helped set up the deals afterwards to give them super oil fields. Are you seriously going to say the U.S. government did that for free out of the kindness of it's heart? And if the U.S. cared so much about Iraq then why didn't we help them create their own oil infrastructure instead of offering it to outside investors?

Thank you for reading the article. I was about to mention Emerson as well, because every time I give him relevant material he refuses to read it :coffee:. Let's also not forget that ExxonMobil (another gigantic U.S. originated corporation) also got a huge cut of the Iraqi Oil Law. Chevron (U.S. based as well), also entered negotiations but were outbidded by Russian interests.

We didn't walk away. We restructured Iraq's government to reflect our own values and goals, we allowed lobbysists to secure deals on behalf of large western oil companies, and we restructured their entire military to defend a government and laws we backed. Just because you see our groundtroops leave doesn't mean our presence is gone.

The only reason Russian and China got cuts was because they were bidding higher prices that some other companies, like what happened to Chevron when they tried to bid. These Chinese and Russian companies are massive in size and would follow the same protocol of using lobbyists.

By the way, what you are saying about Al Jazeera is simply opinion. READ THE ARTICLE before you find more excuses to avoid a real debate with me.

so we went to war to help our enemies? DO you really think the US is that dumb?

We spent trillions to be potentially out bid?

I read the article. If vilifies the US while downplaying china and russia's gain. Clear bias

We may have been outbid on some oil properties by Russia and China, however that was a tactical choice by U.S. companies because those were bids on some of the most dangerous territories to develop over long term and offered the lowest profit margins. Any bids that we didn't choose to take we instead secured major subcontracts with the Russian and Chinese corporations that bought them.

Don't forget that the four major U.S. companies carrying out the subcontracting are based in Houston, TX and have strong ties to oil services. Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Weatherford International and Schlumberger won the largest portion of the subcontracts to drill for oil, build wells and refurbish old equipment.

China and Russia are taking the largest risks (and may never see a large profit) while the U.S. collects billions immediately.

"American drilling companies stand to make tens of billions of dollars from the new petroleum activity in Iraq long before any of the oil producers start seeing any returns on their investments."

And his 400,000 stock share severance package from Halliburtion that he had in his possession before the war. Halliburton had numerous successful contracts during the war and now they are one of the major subcontractors drilling Iraqi oil on behalf of China and Russia. Cheney has made millions off those shares by now.

By the way check this out:

Cheney was a prominent member of the National Energy Policy Development Group (NEPDG),[97] commonly known as the Energy task force, which comprised energy industry representatives, including several Enron executives. After the Enron scandal, the Bush administration was accused of improper political and business ties. In July 2003, the Supreme Court ruled that the US Department of Commerce must disclose NEPDG documents, containing references to companies that had made agreements with the previous Iraqi government to extract Iraq's petroleum.[98]

Beginning in 2003, Cheney's staff opted not to file required reports with the National Archives and Records Administration office charged with assuring that the executive branch protects classified information, nor did it allow inspection of its record keeping.[99] Cheney refused to release the documents, citing his executive privilege to deny congressional information requests.[100][101] Media outlets such as Time magazine and CBS News questioned whether Cheney had created a "fourth branch of government" that was not subject to any laws.[102] A group of historians and open-government advocates filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, asking the court to declare that Cheney's vice-presidential records are covered by the Presidential Records Act of 1978 and cannot be destroyed, taken or withheld from the public without proper review.
