I made a thread about this. I think that if the Sharingan was derived from the Byakugan, then the Hyuga cam first. I said that the SO6P had 2-3 sons/daughter.

It should be the other way around. The Sharingan came from a weaker Doujutsu. That's how things usually work.

no what I mean is that rinnegan came first into the world via the sage and the descendents of the elder son have sharingan. My theory is that somewhere along the line an uchiha had some mutation and the byakugan is a diluted sharingan, or possibly not related at all to the sage. I think what you're thinking I said is how sharingan evolves to ms/ems to rinnegan.

Oro and Kabuto hypothesized that the Rinnegan was a natural evolution of the Sharingan, since Madara did awaken his before he died. It's like how humans started in Africa but they spread to different parts of the world and evolved to fit the circumstances of each region. The person with the sharingan was probably around chakra heavy users and needed a way to cut off their points so he(and his later descendants) used the sharingan's ability to see chakra & chakra flow, too much and it just evolved into the byakugan. Tobi already said that the sharingan is derived from the rinnegan so this seems to be the only logical way that the byakugan comes into play but if anyone else has a different theory then go ahead..

I have to know if evolution is to improve, how come the rinnegan de-evolved? Not saying it got weaker but the final stage of Sharingan is the rinnegan... makes sense how they set it up in the story line. But what if the Hyuga clan was distant relatives? like a Uchiha left and mated with a clan who could see chakra but not effectively and the Hyuga clan was born.
